SIR ALEX'S RESPECT FOR ROY  Sir Alex is looking forward to locking horns with Roy Hodgson again on Sunday as he's pleased the West Brom manager has been able to show his coaching class at The Hawthorns. The 64-year-old has enjoyed a distinguished career in charge of both top clubs like Inter Milan but also national teams such as Switzerland and Finland. However, he had an unhappy spell at Liverpool, undertaking the shortest reign of any manager in the Merseysiders' history. "Roy probably couldn't win at Anfield really," admitted Sir Alex. "Sometimes timing is bad for certain jobs and that was bad timing for him. But there is no disputing his ability, his credibility and the career he's had over the years. You can't dismiss that." The Baggies have taken nine points out of nine since losing to Swansea with a derby day to remember at Molineux providing a real upsurge in confidence. "West Brom are in a bit of form - they've won their last three games and scored five at Wolves and beat Chelsea," said the boss. "Roy always has his teams organised and it'll be the same on Sunday. Some fans feel the toughest games are out of the way. But West Brom didn't exactly roll over at OT last term, did they? No, definitely not. They were the team who put a little blemish on our home record last year. Roy Hodgson, a manager I know, has since gone there and done very well. No game is easy in this league. It's often the case that teams who are written off will go out and do something special, like West Brom beating Chelsea last weekend, for the first time in the Premier League. It's going to be another big test for us as we try to keep the pressure up [on City]. You were managed by Roy Hodgson at Fulham. What kind of boss is he? He's very meticulous. We had a lot of video analysis sessions with him at Fulham, and did a lot of work on our team shape. He made sure that every player knew his job. It seems that approach is working for him again at West Brom and I'm glad he's doing well. Could he do with West Brom what he did at Fulham and take them into the Europa League? Yes, it could be an option. There are quite a lot of teams now in the Premier League who are getting stronger and attracting the sort of players who can maybe help them in terms of European football. It could be a possible aim for them. Presumably the players aren't feeling complacent about the run-in? No, we're not. We need to make sure we set our stall out, win our games and hopefully score a few goals in the run-in. There are only 11 games to go and each one will be like a cup final. BOSS TARGETS YET ANOTHER WIN AT TOTTENHAM Sir Alex Ferguson finds it difficult to explain why United have such a wonderful record against Tottenham Hotspur but he's certainly hoping to extend it at White Hart Lane on Sunday. The champions are unbeaten against the North London club since the 2000/2001 season and have won five of the last six Barclays Premier League meetings. Overall, the Reds have won 75 league meetings compared to just 35 in Spurs' favour. When asked why United traditionally do well against them, Sir Alex said: "It's difficult to say over a long period of time with different teams and different managers. But I'm glad we do have a good record against them at White Hart Lane. We do at Old Trafford as well but our home record is good against most teams." The manager feels Spurs' derby-day disaster at Arsenal last Sunday was probably just a one-off for Harry Redknapp's third-placed side. "I watched the game against Arsenal and Spurs had an unusual game for them," stated Sir Alex. "It was a strange game and I think derbies can be like that. It's difficult to predict them too much. I fancied Tottenham and I think most people did but Arsenal were amazing and just caught them on the day." As Head of Fitness and Conditioning, my main priority is to ensure that the players are fit and ready for training and matches so I liaise between the medical and technical teams to plan what the players do on a day-to-day basis. How is your job affected when players go on international duty, like this week? At Carrington we can keep control but unfortunately, when the players go away on international duty, we only have limited input. You have to communicate with the respective football associations. When Ji-sung Park was playing for South Korea, I once travelled with him to maintain the habits we have at United. What work can do you with those who aren't playing for their countries? Five years ago, we only had two or three first-team players around but now we have a lot who have retired from international football. This allows us to adjust their training intensity so that those who feature regularly, like Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick, can recover properly. But Sir Alex and Mike Phelan maintain a very high standard and the intensity often goes up. Speaking of Giggsy, how big an achievement was it for him to reach 900 games? It was fantastic. Ryan thinks about what he needs for the next game. He manages the support system around him by utilising the physios, the medics and both the fitness and technical teams. Incredibly, he's still banging out fantastic figures with the sports science guys. He is a credit to himself and the football club. Finally, what shape are we in for the title run-in? Everything is coming together. The manager did well to expose the players who needed game time against Ajax. We are trying to bring them up a level so they're ready to be called on when needed. For example, Ashley Young at first needed time to recover from his injury but he looked fresh against Norwich where I thought he was terrific. As one of the teams parachuted in from the Champions League last month, the Reds are ranked among the favourites to lift the trophy. When asked if Sir Alex's men should be aiming to go all the way to the Bucharest final, Denis replied: "Absolutely. And there's a fair chance United could go on and win it. "It's a shame for some of the teams who started the season in the Europa League when sides like United and Man City later come into it from the Champions League. But that's the way European football has gone and I'm glad we're still in Europe. It's great for young players to get the experience of playing against foreign teams. It's lovely for the fans as well because we enjoy watching the other sides. "In the old days, this competition used to have the second-placed teams from each league. Now it has teams who finished fifth or sixth but they're not poor sides. The quality of teams in the Europa League is still good."
