JONES: BRING ON THE BIG GAMES

Phil Jones says taking on one huge match after another is a key aspect of being a Manchester United player.

The England international is delighted to be fit and thriving again after a frustrating spell out injured during the first half of the campaign. After earning praise from Sir Alex Ferguson for his defensive display in the FA Cup replay win against West Ham, Jones hopes to be involved in as many matches as possible in the coming weeks as the Reds battle on three fronts.

“The reason you come to Manchester United is to play in big games every week in different competitions,” Jones told Red View. “As well as league games and FA Cup matches we’ve got two massive games coming up against Real Madrid and they’re all matches that I’ll relish if I'm involved.

“Personally, it was good to get another full game in [against West Ham] and good to be playing at centre-back which is a position I always enjoy playing.

"I was just pleased to get a run-out. It’s been so frustrating to be out injured – I’m a nightmare patient! But I feel fit and strong and hopefully I can get a good run in the side between now and the end of the season.

"It’s great to come back into a team that’s doing so well and playing so well. It’s a nice feeling to be top of the league and hopefully we can keep things going this weekend.”

Next up for the Reds is Sunday's visit to high-flying Tottenham and Jones admits the hosts "have got some brilliant individual players and we'll have to be wary of them all.

"It’ll be a test for whoever comes up against Gareth Bale – he’s a great player. But the most important thing for us is to concentrate on what we’re about and how we’ll approach the game."

EVANS' UNITED AMBITION

Jonny Evans looks to the future after recently renewing his commitment to the Reds...

You signed a new contract before Christmas. Do you see yourself as a one-club player?
I’d like to. Obviously I’ve had my loan spells but I have come through the Academy here and now I’m in the first team. When I was younger, clubs were asking me to go on trial from a young age and I never went on trial to another club. I just knew that Manchester United was the place I wanted to play football. So to play here throughout my career would be something I would look to do and I’d love to do it. But I can’t look too far ahead. I’m still only 24 so I’ll see where this takes me.

In five years’ time, do you think you’ll appreciate even more having learned your trade alongside Rio and Nemanja?
When I first came into the first-team squad, the level that those two were playing at was unbelievable. It was a big ask for younger players to try and emulate them. It still is, I suppose, although Chris [Smalling] has been here three years now and Phil [Jones] is in his second season. But for me coming through the youth team, looking at these two fantastic players, it was all about trying to get to that level – not necessarily as quickly as possible but just to the best of my ability. I just tried to be as good as I can be really. That’s been the challenge for me. It’s not really been the challenge of getting into a normal first-team – it’s the challenge of trying to reach a standard set by Rio and Vidic, two of the best centre-backs in the world. It’s probably the biggest challenge of all.

Which of your team-mates has impressed you most this season?
I actually think Rafael has done really well. He has shown real maturity. His brother has gone out on loan now and it’s probably given him a lot more responsibility. Because of the injuries, too, there hasn’t been much competition for him at right-back so he has really stepped into the position and made it his own.

The full interview with Jonny Evans appears in this month's Inside United, the club's official magazine.

FOCUS ON... FEDERICO MACHEDA

The Italian striker goes under the spotlight in an interview first shown on MUTV...

I first kicked a ball when...
I was seven, I think. My dad took me to a football club and I started to play there.

How I signed for United...
I'd just started and couldn't believe it because I thought it was fake talk. So I'd started to play for my team and then the scout had been calling me from Manchester United and I started to realise it was real.

My footballing idol
It was Marco van Basten, the striker from AC Milan. When I was young, my dad used to show me his clips from when he was playing. So he was my idol. I think he was maybe the best striker ever, for me.

My favourite footballing moment
Of course, the day of my debut. It was brilliant for me. The week before, the manager said to me I had a chance to go on the bench. Of course, I was happy but as I was young, I didn't believe it. In my next game for the reserves, I scored three goals and then, that Sunday, I was on the bench. I didn't think I'd go on the pitch that day because I thought I was just making up the numbers with all the strikers missing. But then Sir Alex called me and I couldn't believe it. I was on the pitch and the rest happened as it happened!

My career ambitions
Of course, I want to become a top footballer. That's my dream and nobody can stop me. I want to achieve lots of stuff in football even if I know it won't be easy.

What do you love about football?
I think the supporters. The atmosphere in the stadium in the big games, stuff like that. I love training with my team-mates as well. We're always laughing in the changing room and it's great.

CHICHARITO: WE ALL WANT TO PLAY ON SUNDAY

Javier Hernandez believes that any player in the world would want to be a part of Sunday’s showdown between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The arch-rivals go head-to-head at 13:30 GMT this Sunday and Chicharito is well aware of the history and tradition of the fixture.

“It’s a derby game and these two teams have won the most titles in England,” says Chicharito in an exclusive interview with United Review for Sunday’s game. “It’s a match you want to be involved in. Every player wants to play on Sunday – any player in the world would want to be a part of it.”

The Mexican forward's first appearance against Liverpool was as a starter in the 1-0 FA Cup third round win in January 2011. And with doubts remaining over the fitness of Wayne Rooney, Hernandez could find a place in the first eleven again this weekend.

Chicharito has scored twice in five appearances against Liverpool – a consolation strike in March 2011’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield and then in October that year the livewire forward snatched a more positive, point-saving late equaliser, again away from home.

“When we lost 3-1 it was a strange feeling for me,” he adds. “It was my first season and to score against Liverpool at Anfield was good, but it doesn’t have the same taste when you lose. It was different when I scored in the 1-1 draw because we were losing and we got a point. It’s a brilliant feeling to score in this game.”

ALWAYS A RED: MIKAEL SILVESTRE

Mikael Silvestre played 361 games and scored 10 goals for Manchester United between 1999 and 2008. Here, the versatile French defender reflects on his Old Trafford career...

My transfer: I was away with France Under 21s – we had two games, Ukraine and Albania. I spoke to Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier as well as Sir Alex Ferguson but United had just won the Treble so it was an easy choice for me to make! I was picked up by Sir Alex at the airport and he drove me to my hotel, the Marriott at Worsley, and we had a chat there. I had spoken to him on the phone before but it was easier for me to talk face to face as my English wasn’t so good. Or should I say, my Scottish!

My debut: After talking to both United and Liverpool, I had no idea I’d make my debut at Anfield. I hadn’t looked at the schedule! I came over on Thursday night, signed on Friday morning, trained, and then played early on Saturday. I didn’t have time to think about anything but it was good, even if the Liverpool fans booed me for choosing United. It was a great game, but I don’t remember much apart from the feeling at the end, knowing we’d won [3-2].

Favourite game: It was when I scored two goals against Liverpool at Old Trafford, when Rio Ferdinand came back after his suspension. We won 2-1 and it was the only time I scored a double for United. It wasn’t my best game defensively, even though Liverpool only scored through an own goal by John O’Shea, but I was inspired at the other end that day in terms of attacking at corners. I was in the right place at the right time, twice, and it was a wonderful night for me.

Favourite goal: It was probably my winning goal against Leeds at Old Trafford [in March 2003], that was a really important one. It was towards the end of the game [79th minute] and I managed to get on the end of David Beckham’s free-kick to make the final score 2-1...

JONES ANSWERS THE FANS

Reds defender Phil Jones tackles questions from fans posting on United's official Facebook page...

People describe you as a ‘future United captain’ – how does that sound? - Connor Derbyshire
It sounds great and it’s nice if people think that one day that might happen, but there is a long way to go before I think I can even consider it as a possibility. It would be a massive achievement for me as a footballer to captain Manchester United and it would be a great honour. I’m honest with myself and I know I’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of me in my career to become the player I want to be. So I’ll focus on that for now.

Who’s the best United player you’ve played with – who would you pay to see play? - Andrew Keogh
It has to be Paul Scholes. He’s a joy to watch, even just in training. He is a magnet to the ball in training and in games. He just never gives it away and he can pick out anyone on the field with a pass other players wouldn’t even see. He’s incredible.

We’re top of the league now, so are you confident we can reclaim the title? - Hayden Allen
I hope we can because, like the fans, we really want to win it back. But just because we want to do it and believe we can do it doesn’t mean that we will do it. There's a long way to go. We’re not getting carried away.

SMALLING RELISHES TOUGH CUP TIE

Chris Smalling admits the FA Cup third-round draw could have been kinder to Manchester United - but he insists confidence is high in a squad determined to make its mark in the competition this season.

The famous trophy has eluded the Reds since 2004, when Sir Alex's men beat Millwall to win it for a record eleventh time. Two subsequent defeats in finals (2005 and 2007) and two semi-final exits (2009 and 2011) tell part of the frustrating story.

"We've haven’t done too well in the cup in the last few years and the manager has made that point to us," Smalling told ManUtd.com and PA Sport. "We need to make sure we get back on track in the competition, especially as the league is going well and we’re into the Champions League knock-out stages. We want to do well in the cup as well.

"The FA Cup has always been a massive competition. You’ve got the situation where lower league teams have the chance to play some of the top sides and it can be a real adventure for a lot of sides."

The Reds' tie is an all top-flight affair of course and even though West Ham have lost two of their last three home games, Smalling fully expects a tough test in the Saturday tea-time clash.

“We expect a tough game. When I saw the draw I thought it wasn’t the easiest one we could have had, but it’ll be a good atmosphere and Upton Park is always somewhere I’ve enjoyed playing," he added.

“Sam Allardyce has done very well and got a good team together. The fans really get behind them, especially at Upton Park, and that will make it more difficult for us compared to if we were playing them at home.

“It’s a tough draw for us, but you can end up playing anyone in the cup and you’ve got to beat everybody put in front of you. Hopefully we can put on a good show at Upton Park.”

BÜTTNER GETS RUUD SUPPORT

United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has backed fellow countryman Alexander Büttner to make his mark in the future.

The summer signing from Vitesse Arnhem is in contention for a start at West Ham in the FA Cup on Saturday after Sir Alex Ferguson promised to rest first-choice left-back Patrice Evra.

Büttner has so far appeared once in the Barclays Premier League, scoring in the home win against Wigan, and featured in three European fixtures and two Capital One Cup ties.

After being bought as cover for Evra, the defender has already admitted he is pleased with his first months in Manchester.

"Alexander has made a great start," van Nistelrooy told ManUtd.com. "He needs a bit more time as he's definitely somebody for the future.

"He's been getting games in the Champions League. For him, it's a dream come true. He's got the ability and needs to learn to obtain more experience and he's definitely somebody to look out for."

WELBECK ANSWERS THE FANS

Danny Welbeck fields questions from fans posting on United's official Facebook page...

Which player names were on the back of your shirts when you were a kid? Hui Cheng
Actually, I think I had my nickname, ‘Welbz’, on my shirt but no player names. If I could have had anyone, it would have been Giggs as I idolised him. I liked Thierry Henry, too, but that wouldn’t have gone down too well on a United top!

What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever received? Jakob Aidor
Probably a PlayStation. After I got it, me and my brother sat in our room for hours, and my mum and dad didn’t get any hassle. I used to play the first Pro Evo game as Ronaldo – there was no stopping me!

You've scored some great goals for club and country. Which one is your favourite? - Mohamed Kaid
I’d say my first goal for United, on my league debut against Stoke [November 2008] – that was a special moment for me and I was pleased with the strike. After that, my first goal for England against Belgium at Wembley in June, then the backheel winner in Euro 2012 against Sweden.

Which of your team-mates would you want on your side in a snowball fight? - Kayleigh Dean
I’d have to go with someone with a good throw, so David De Gea. He has massive hands – if he hits you with one of his snowballs, it’s hurting! I’d pick Antonio Valencia, too, as he has big arms and I reckon his snowballs would go straight through you.
