OWEN EYES WIN OVER OLD COLLEAGUES

Michael Owen may have won the FA Cup with Liverpool but there's nothing he'd like more on Sunday than to knock his old club out of the famous competition.

Fit again after a three-month absence, the United striker hopes he's selected for a match that he feels will be far from easy, despite the opposition's poor recent form.

“We're delighted we're at home but we know it's going to be tough,” Owen told United Review, the official matchday programme.

“It's probably fair to say we'd both have been hoping for an easier path to the next round, but that's the beauty of the FA Cup. Big teams always go out and this year it won't be any different. We just hope it's not us."

Should Owen be given the nod against Liverpool he’ll make only his second FA Cup appearance for United. But it’s a competition the forward has a long history with, having won it with Sunday’s visitors back in 2001.

“In many ways, some of the shine's been taken away from the FA Cup for the fans, I think. The Premier League and the Champions League are so big now that the FA Cup is forced to take a backseat. As a player, though, it's very much a trophy you still want to win."

CRERAND: CUP RIVALS ARE DOWN - AND OUT?

United legend Paddy Crerand believes the Reds have an opportunity to further increase the gloom surrounding Liverpool on Sunday.

To say the two teams go into the FA Cup third round tie in differing form is a huge understatement, with Sir Alex Ferguson's men in prime position to pursue an unprecedented 19th league title while the Merseysiders are just four points above the relegation zone. No wonder Crerand is relishing the clash.

"You can’t help but be excited by Liverpool’s FA Cup visit on Sunday,” Paddy told us. "I still think the FA Cup is third on our list of priorities this season - behind the title and Champions League - but we’ve not won it for a while, and besides, how can we not be up for it against one of our greatest rivals?

“It’s a big game for us, but even bigger for Liverpool because if we knock them out their season would be over in terms of domestic trophies. It’s an amazing tie, let’s hope it lives up to its billing.”

Every United fan is dreaming of that 19th title which would see the club break Liverpool's record of league championships - and Paddy's no different.

“I want us to win the title and lift the European Cup at Wembley - so I’m not asking for a lot! To win the league again - and it’s definitely within our capability - would be fantastic for our supporters and for this club because we’d overtake Liverpool."

Match Pack Liverpool

MY TEAM TO BEAT LIVERPOOL - WHAT'S YOURS?

Season-ticket holder James Shaw names the eleven he'd like to see starting Sunday's big game for United...

A year on from last season’s humiliating FA Cup third round exit to bitter rivals Leeds, Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed not to make the same mistake again – with regard to team selection - when he takes on a struggling Liverpool side.

For this reason I firmly believe that the manager will pick the strongest team available to him, and with the opposition seemingly there for the taking I think he'll favour 4-4-2.

I expect Edwin van der Sar to play in goal as long as he recovers from the flu that has kept him out of the Reds' last two fixtures. Rio Ferdinand should return to play alongside captain Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the defence and I see no reason why Rafael and Patrice Evra shouldn't continue in the full-back berths.

I’d pair Darren Fletcher and the in-form Anderson together in the centre of midfield with Tuesday’s match winner Nani on the right and Ryan Giggs on the left.

Even though Wayne Rooney will be desperate to play for obvious reasons, I'd be tempted to leave him on the bench considering he’s only just got back into training following the injury he picked up in the West Brom game. Chicharito is full of confidence after two important goals in his last two appearances and Dimitar Berbatov will have fond memories of the hat-trick he bagged against Liverpool back in September. I have every confidence that a partnership of Berba and Chicha would be more than enough to do the damage.
