SMALLING HUNGRY FOR MORE
Chris Smalling hopes he’s forced his way into Sir Alex Ferguson’s domestic plans after another impressive performance in the Champions League. The 20-year-old barely broke sweat as he partnered Nemanja Vidic in the heart of United's defence during Wednesday's 1-0 win over Bursaspor. And with the Reds facing 10 games in all competitions over the next five weeks, the former Fulham defender senses an opportunity for more valuable game-time. “It’s great to start getting some games and now I just need to play more – that’s the next step for me,” Smalling told MUTV. “We have some cup competitions coming up but I’m also hoping for some chances in the league. We are playing two games a week at the minute and I definitely want to be involved in my fair share of them.” The Londoner may have to bide his time as Sir Alex has already confirmed Rio Ferdinand will return to the side for Sunday’s trip to the Britannia Stadium, where United will face a stern examination against physical Stoke. Smalling continued: “Stoke is not an easy place to go – I remember playing there last year with Fulham and it was pretty intimidating. They have a different style of football but that’s just something we have to deal with, and I think we have more than enough to cope. It’s crucial for us to win to keep up with the leading pack.” More: Rio back, Rooney out | Evra still positive | Rafael - "I love crisps" |
