Red View: De Gea relishes tie, Fabio Q&A, Norwich v United video + more

DE GEA RELISHES SPANISH RETURN

David De Gea is eagerly anticipating playing his first United game in Spain following the Reds' aggregate victory over Ajax in the Europa League.

The summer acquisition from Atletico Madrid will be back in his homeland on 15 March, for the Round of 16, second leg match against Athletic Bilbao. De Gea played a key role in overcoming Ajax over the two legs, including one world-class save to deny Siem De Jong,

"I was lucky enough to be able to help the team and now we're in the next round," he told UEFA.com. "We started very well with a goal from Chicharito which put us in control but I think we relaxed a bit and felt too confident and, if you do that against a team like Ajax, what happened to us can happen - you lose the game.

"The manager wasn't happy but we got through and that's the important thing. Athletic Bilbao are a good team. I've got lots of friends there and it'll be great to go back to Spain - and to win."

De Gea has happy memories of Bilbao's San Mames Stadium after helping Atletico Madrid win 2-1 there in September 2010. However, his side then lost the return match in La Liga, 0-2 at home in January 2011.

FABIO ANSWERS THE FANS

The Brazilian left-back fields questions from United Review readers...

Have you ever claimed credit for something Rafael has done? Nick Millard
When I was young, yes! In school, sometimes, and at parties with girls [laughs]. Maybe seven years ago, when we looked the same. Now there are differences but back then our hair was the same and sometimes we wore the same clothes.

Who would win a race between you and Rafael? Amit
[Laughs]. This is a hard question. Some months, one is faster than the other one. The next month, it changes. It's always changing. When we were younger, I was faster - maybe now I'm a little faster than him too!

You've taken free-kicks for Brazil. Do you hope to do so here? Carlos Villanueva
A lot of players here can take free-kicks. One day I hope I can take them but I'm young so I have to wait. Maybe I'll start to practise them and then they'll let me.

Did you enjoy playing golf on tour in pre-season? Amir Ahmed
Yeah, it was the first time I played in my life! It's different in Brazil because, for some reason, we don't play out there. We play more volleyball, basketball and football. Golf is not played really. It was fun though. I nearly hit my brother but it was funny!

DE LAET IMPRESSED BY CANARIES' ETHIC

Ritchie De Laet's inside knowledge of Norwich City suggests Manchester United will have to work hard for a vital league victory on Sunday.

The Reds defender spent the first four months of this season on loan at Carrow Road, and developed an admiration for the East Anglian club's collective spirit. From the dug-out to the dressing room, to the backing of the entire town, De Laet says the Canaries' togetherness is key.

"There are no big players at Norwich," De Laet told ManUtd.com this week.

"Some of the players have come all the way from League One to the Premier League with Norwich and with the same manager, Paul Lambert. When I was there, he'd often come in the dressing room or the gym and have banter with the lads. But the players also knew exactly what the manager expected of them. They play the same system that has earned them two promotions. It's a hard system to play against, and they've just kept going with the same winning mentality."

The Canaries have picked up points in nine of their 12 home league games - a similar record to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this season. So what is it that makes Carrow Road the proverbial tough place to visit? De Laet has two theories.

"For a start, it's far away! For example, it's four hours from Manchester by road, although United will fly to Norwich. And because there's only one team in the neighbourhood, everybody supports them. The local fans get behind the team really well."

NANI TARGETS EUROPA FINAL

Nani is determined that Manchester United will go all the way in the Europa League after beating Ajax 2-0 in Thursday's first leg in the Round of 32.

The Portuguese winger made his comeback after recovering from an ankle injury sustained against Arsenal and set up the opening goal for Ashley Young in the second half.

"It was a very important win," Nani said. "We wanted to start this competition in the right way. Of course we want to win. We will do our best to reach the final.

"The Europa League is an important competition. It is the same as the Champions League to me - we want to win every competition we enter.

"Now we are in it, we only want to think about winning it. And the club have never won the trophy so now we will try to do this.

"We are strong and we have to fight in every game to continue to give our supporters what they want - trophies. That is what we want as well."

DE GEA EARNS PLAUDITS

David De Gea was showered with praise from United players and coaches alike after keeping a clean sheet at Ajax on Thursday.

The Spanish shot-stopper made a great diving save to thwart Siem de Jong in the first half and showed his concentration by denying Christian Eriksen after a long spell without being tested in Amsterdam. A couple of late stops, including one from Ismail Aissati, ensured the Reds left the Dutch capital with a two-goal advantage ahead of next week's second leg.

Sir Alex Ferguson feels his summer signing from Atletico Madrid is showing assurance after returning to the team for the game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

"De Gea made a good save in the first half," said Sir Alex. "He was confident. He was assured and controlled his penalty box very well. We are very pleased with him."

Those thoughts were echoed by Jonny Evans, who enjoyed another impressive performance ahead of the young keeper in defence.

"We all see what he's like in training," Evans told MUTV. "He has great reflexes, great spring and gets to some things you think other keepers might not be able to get to. It is a real plus in his game."

ROONEY ANSWERS FANS' QUESTIONS

Wazza responded to supporters in the latest edition of United Review, the official matchday programme...

What is the main thing you think about just before taking a penalty? Zakacham2
You just try to stay calm. I always know where I'm going to put the ball - I make my mind up the day before the game. I watch videos of the goalkeeper, have a chat with our goalkeeping coach and then decide. When you're stood there you just try to avoid eye contact with the goalkeeper and wait for the referee's whistle.

What's been your best goal this season? Elspeth
I'd probably say my header against Man City in the Cup. It was a great cross from Antonio [Valencia] and, although I could see Nani coming towards the ball at the same time, my sole focus was on winning the header - and thankfully it went in.

Aside from football, if you could take part in an Olympic event what would it be, and why? James Hobson
[Pauses] I'd have to say boxing. I've always been a big fan and would enjoy taking part.

What has been the best moment of your football career so far? Connor Hughes
Winning my first league title. It was a great feeling and, by far, my proudest in football.

  Tip of the Month
Boost your AdSense revenue with improved ad styles

By making your ads more visible for users, you can increase your click through rate and ultimately your AdSense revenue. Base the colour design of your ad units on one or more of the three basic techniques: Blend, Complement or Contrast (see below). We've found through working with publishers that ads with light coloured borders or no borders at all perform best.

When choosing colours, also take the position of your ad units into consideration: If an ad is well integrated into your site's content, blending the ads can underline the feeling of contextual relevance. For an ad unit which is further away from the main content, more contrasting colours can help catching the user's attention. If you have a website with repeat visitors, you might want to switch the ad colours occasionally to avoid ad blindness. Remember, the goal isn't to confuse users into thinking ads are content, but to get users to see and read the ads so they can click on those that interest them.

  Optimise your ad styles today

We've also recently launched an improvement to our default font settings. For each ad unit that's set to show the default font face and font size, our system will now automatically show the best-performing option. You can find more information about this improvement in our Inside AdSense blog.

HERNANDEZ HAILS REDS' SPIRIT

Javier Hernandez believes Manchester United will take the boost of a remarkable fightback at Chelsea into the next big game, against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The Mexican marksman headed the equaliser at Stamford Bridge last weekend - just as he did at Anfield last October - and this precious point means the Reds can go top, at least for one night, by winning the home game against the Merseysiders.

"We went home [from Chelsea] with a lot of confidence," revealed Hernandez. "To come back from 3-0 down shows the spirit of our team. Throughout Manchester United's history, the team has never given up. We fight until the last minute.

"Right now, Manchester City are two points ahead of us but there are a lot of games to go, so we need to look forward, keep working and keep fighting."

Hernandez has already faced Liverpool four times in his first 18 months as a United player, with each clash bolstering his knowledge of English football's biggest duel.

"I have learned a lot about the rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool," he said on Friday. "I knew a lot about this already in Mexico. In all the world, people know about the history of both teams, with so many Premier League titles and European Cups between them. It is a very important rivalry.

"[The build-up to this game] is a bit different. We work just the same as we have done for every game. But in the back of your mind, you know it is Liverpool."

PHELAN FEELS THE COMPETITIVE EDGE

United's assistant manager Mike Phelan says there is a noticeable change in the Carrington atmosphere when any season approaches its critical phase.

As the New Year fades into the distance, the United players can sense glory is within reach and the impact of this can be felt around the training ground.

"The competition within the group increases at this time of year, it's incredible," Phelan told MUTV.

"Even in training, you see a massive difference in the way the players apply themselves. They are all ready and wanting to be involved at the end of the season."

With vast experience of the title race run-in, the players know what it takes to come out on top and will be doing everything between February and May to ensure the Barclays Premier League trophy remains at Old Trafford.

"Experience, in some degree, is the right thing to have," Phelan added. "We know how to handle certain times of the year. For example, we know we're going to get injuries in the early part of the season but then, after Christmas in January and February, we know we'll get that big group back together."

LINGARD AIMS FOR BREAKTHROUGH

Young United forward Jesse Lingard is hoping to make his senior bow before the season is out after earning his first call-ups to Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.

The 19-year-old has been one of the Reserves' star performers this term - he scored his fifth goal of the campaign in Thursday's 4-2 defeat to Man City in the Manchester Senior Cup. But although he was on the bench for the Carling Cup clash with Crystal Palace and Barclays Premier League encounter at Newcastle, he has yet to get a taste of the senior action.

"I've been involved with the first team and I am playing well for the Reserves so we'll see where it goes from there," Lingard told MUTV. "The aim is for more and hopefully I can play in the Europa League.

"It was good experience [at Newcastle], being around the players. Obviously, if you're going to be a Manchester United player, you have got to get used to that sort of stuff and I enjoyed it. It's always a good vibe. You talk about tactics before the match, and the coaches make sure you get enough rest for the big game.

"I've been getting a lot of advice actually. Chicharito told me about movement, Wayne Rooney spoke about finishing and Dimitar Berbatov talked about composure. It's good to get a lot of tips from them."

BATTLE OF STAMFORD BRIDGE

Sir Alex is prepared for a tough tussle at Chelsea after admitting Andre-Villas Boas has changed the style of the Stamford Bridge outfit.

The Blues have regularly competed for top honours with United since Roman Abramovich bought the West Londoners and the manager is relishing the chance to improve on a relatively poor recent Barclays Premier League record at their home.

"In the last seven years, there have been battles with Chelsea," he stated. "In the previous decade, it was Arsenal. There have been terrific battles between us and Chelsea. The manager has brought in two or three different players and I noticed when we played them in the home game earlier in the season there was a change in the style from the previous Chelsea teams.

"When a new manager comes in on the back of someone so successful like Carlo Ancelotti, changes maybe take time. Everyone has their different philosophy and their different ways of doing things and I think that's what we're seeing with Chelsea at the moment.

"It was a crazy game at Old Trafford earlier in the season - it could have been 20-18! I don't think it will be like that on Sunday. I think it will be much tighter."

SMALLING STEELED FOR CHELSEA

Chris Smalling thinks Chelsea will provide stern opposition on Sunday as United bid to win at Stamford Bridge in the Barclays Premier League for the first time since 2002.

The Reds will have gained confidence from recording a superb 1-0 Champions League win in West London last season when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal and three home triumphs against the Blues have followed since then.

"Chelsea have had a few ups and downs, a few poor results, but I don't think you can ever rule out Chelsea," he insisted. "They've won plenty of titles over the years and they have a strong squad, although they've lost one or two players to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. That will make it more difficult."

The away supporters' backing will again provide a lift to the champions as the Reds will look to respond to Manchester City, who can pull away at the top of the table again after Saturday's fixture against Fulham at home.

"The fans have a huge part to play," added Smalling. "When we go into those sorts of places, where the atmospheres can be hostile, it's a great feeling to hear the United fans singing songs. And they sing right from the warm-up through to the final whistle. It gives us confidence and added motivation to dig deep and pull out a result."

RAFAEL ANSWERS FANS' QUESTIONS

Brazilian ace Rafael responded to some questions posed by fans for United Review, the matchday programme...

Who's the toughest winger you've faced since you came to England? - Shaun Birch.
I've faced a lot of hard players but I'd have to say Craig Bellamy. When I played against him a few years ago [when he was with Manchester City] it was very tough. He's so quick! And he never stops running, so you never get any rest. I had to be on top of my game against him. It was the same against Gareth Bale of Tottenham.

You've been at United now for four years. Does it feel that long? - Alice Osbourne.
Not really. When you stop and think about it, four years is a long time, but it feels like it's gone by in a flash. I've had an amazing time at this club and hope I'm here for much longer.

What's been your most memorable game in a United shirt so far? - Ieuan Evans.
I know we lost the game, but I scored my first goal for United against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. That was a great moment for me and I'll never forget that. I also have very fond memories of my debut, against Middlesbrough. I think the first time you do anything it's always memorable and playing at Old Trafford for the first time was a great experience.
