FLETCH: WE'LL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR FIRST AWAY WIN

Games against Bolton may not hold the same appeal for fans as Liverpool clashes, but for Darren Fletcher, they can also be filed under blood-and-thunder affairs.

The Scot is relishing Sunday's test and says United will have to win the battle before thinking about winning away for the first time in this league season.

“We always experience a good atmosphere and a difficult game at the Reebok Stadium. They’re a local rival and it’s a derby match. You really have to work hard if you’re going to earn a victory there.

"When United are in town their fans get really up for it. The players are up for it too because taking the scalp of United means a lot. We know what to expect from Bolton. Owen Coyle has come in and tried to stamp his mark on the team, but the personnel is pretty much the same. They’ll have two physical strikers in [Kevin] Davies and [Johan] Elmander and they'll want to get the ball into the box as quickly as possible.

"Sometimes you have to earn the right to play, and win the battle first and foremost. It’s important that we do get the ball and when we do get chances we take them.”

GIBSON SHOOTING TO THE TOP

Darron Gibson has a sledgehammer of a right foot and Sir Alex Ferguson wants him to use it to its most devastating effect, but the Irish midfielder is determined not to become typecast as a one-dimensional player.

The 22-year-old has always been known for his strength and power. Even in the youth team he was renowned for an explosive shot and an ability to hit long-distance passes that other young, less powerful, team-mates and opponents could not. Now hovering around the periphery of United’s senior starting eleven, he’s been charged with getting goals from central midfield – a valuable commodity in the modern game.

“The manager has told me he wants me to get forward and score goals this season,” Darron told Red View, the day before he deftly netted United's equaliser at Scunthorpe.

“Sometimes when I hear the crowd yelling ‘shoot’, I laugh because I’m miles away from goal. It's strange but at the same time it’s nice that fans think I can score from distance. Shooting is a big part of my game so I can understand why people yell it out. But I hope people don’t think that’s all I can do."

=?utf-8?Q?Update: Twitter Apps and You=0A?=

Friday, September 17, 2010

Hi @andimbisil,

Over the coming weeks, we will be making two important updates that will impact how you interact with Twitter applications. We are sending this notice to all Twitter users to make sure you are aware of these changes.

What are applications?

There are over 250,000 applications built using the Twitter API. To use most applications, you first authorize the application to access your Twitter account, after which you can use it to read and post Tweets, discover new users and more. Applications come in many varieties, including desktop applications like TweetDeck, Seesmic, or EchoFon, websites such as TweetMeme, fflick, or Topsy, or mobile applications such as Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for Blackberry, or Foursquare.

Update 1: New authorization rules for applications

Starting August 31, all applications will be required to use "OAuth" to access your Twitter account.

What's OAuth?

  • OAuth is a technology that enables applications to access Twitter on your behalf with your approval without asking you directly for your password.
  • Desktop and mobile applications may still ask for your password once, but after that request, they are required to use OAuth in order to access your timeline or allow you to tweet.

What does this mean for me?

  • Applications are no longer allowed to store your password.
  • If you change your password, the applications will continue to work.
  • Some applications you have been using may require you to reauthorize them or may stop functioning at the time of this change.
  • All applications you have authorized will be listed at http://twitter.com/settings/connections.
  • You can revoke access to any application at any time from the list.

Update 2: t.co URL wrapping

In the coming weeks, we will be expanding the roll-out of our link wrapping service t.co, which wraps links in Tweets with a new, simplified link. Wrapped links are displayed in a way that is easier to read, with the actual domain and part of the URL showing, so that you know what you are clicking on. When you click on a wrapped link, your request will pass through the Twitter service to check if the destination site is known to contain malware, and we then will forward you on to the destination URL. All of that should happen in an instant.

You will start seeing these links on certain accounts that have opted-in to the service; we expect to roll this out to all users by the end of the year. When this happens, all links shared on Twitter.com or third-party apps will be wrapped with a t.co URL.

What does this mean for me?

  • A really long link such as http://www.amazon.com/Delivering-Happiness-Profits-Passion-Purpose/dp/0446563048 might be wrapped as http://t.co/DRo0trj for display on SMS, but it could be displayed to web or application users as amazon.com/Delivering- or as the whole URL or page title.
  • You will start seeing links in a way that removes the obscurity of shortened links and lets you know where each link will take you.
  • When you click on these links from Twitter.com or a Twitter application, Twitter will log that click. We hope to use this data to provide better and more relevant content to you over time.

Thanks for reading this important update. Come and check what's new at http://twitter.com.

Thanks,
The Twitter Team

BOSS: BERBA WILL PLAY IN THE BIG ONE

Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t in the habit of giving away too many secrets, but the United boss has confirmed Dimitar Berbatov will face Liverpool.

The Bulgarian has been in fine form this season, netting four goals in five games to silence members of the media who had challenged whether he was cut out to play for the Reds. His boss has always backed the striker and will put his faith in Dimitar again on Sunday at Old Trafford.

“Not everyone’s questioned him,” Sir Alex reminded the press on Friday morning.

“He has a lot of admirers, particularly within this club. He's had some marvellous games for us. I’ve told him he has to dismiss the press. I think he worried about [the headlines sometimes]. But he’s expressed himself this season very well, he’s enjoying his football and he’ll play on Sunday.”

The boss also reiterated his belief that United-Liverpool games are still the biggest drawcard on the English football calendar.

“I may sound like a parrot because I say this time and time again - this is the fixture. The form fluctuates quite a bit - there was a period for about five years when we hardly lost and then recently they won a few in a row. We won the last game so hopefully that swings it back in our favour again.”

POOL ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS

MUTV's David Stowell blogs on Sunday's opponents...

In Rafa we trusted. We knew what to expect from Liverpool under Benitez - not a lot. The "Miracle in Istanbul" aside, he promised much and delivered very little.

Hence Liverpool have had to go back to the drawing board under new manager Roy Hodgson, resulting in a tepid start to the domestic campaign. The former Fulham boss has already admitted there are plenty of issues to be resolved with "a cloud hanging over Anfield." Steven Gerrard smiles in England white while frowning in Merseyside red at the moment. Fernando Torres seems to have lost all his belief and a lot of his ability with one hair-cut and Javier Mascherano's petulance broke new limits in the summer as the Argentinian effectively went on strike. His summer departure did disappoint me purely because of the hilarity he provides in matches with his post-tackle tantrums and the inevitable red/yellow cards that he invites.

Replacing the belligerent Mascherano with the exciting Raul Meireles for a tidy profit is one of a few shrewd moves by Hodgson in the transfer market; another was effectively swopping Yossi Benayoun for Joe Cole and gaining five million pounds in the process. He also stopped the Spanish Armada - Torres and Pepe Reina - from abandoning what looked like a sinking ship.

So, after treading water for a while under Benitez, there's now a splinter of optimism at Anfield. A new, unpredictable future is slowly unfolding.

BEBE'S FIRST OUTING

Bebe's first appearance at United, for the Reserves, ended in a comprehensive 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa but the Portuguese winger still caught the eye.

The 20-year-old operated primarily as a right-sided forward in a three-man attack for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, and his pace and trickery were a source of discomfort for the visiting defenders at Moss Lane, Altrincham.

Bebe also slung several impressive crosses into the Villa box, sadly none of which met the finish they deserved, and he briefly swapped flanks with left-winger Gabriel Obertan during the first half.

Although his outing ultimately ended in defeat, Bebe can reflect positively on his first taste of English football. The youngster also completed the entire match - a timely boost both for his fitness and his manager, following the loss of Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia for much of the season.

Solskjaer told MUTV after the game: "I thought Bebe was very good. He's raw - he's not had the same football education that the rest of our lads have had, so he's got things to learn in this game. I'm sure he will learn. But he's got some exceptional qualities - he's got a great right foot, great left foot and a great shot in him, and his crosses were excellent tonight. He made a good impression."

SCHOLES WARY OF EVERTON THREAT

Paul Scholes has warned against the pitfalls of facing an Everton side needing to kickstart their Barclays Premier League season on Saturday.

The Toffees have mustered just one point and one goal in their first three games, damaging their pre-season aspirations for a top-six finish. Scholes, however, has been around long enough to know a wounded animal can still be very dangerous.

“They are a better team than they have shown so far,” Scholes told ManUtd.com.

“David Moyes has put together a group of good players and they’ve definitely improved over the years. Defensively they’re very good – we found that out at their place last season when, after going 1-0 up, we didn’t really create many chances and lost 3-1. They haven’t scored many so far this season – hopefully they’re not saving them for this weekend!”

Everton have a strong contingent of ex-Reds in the shape of Louis Saha and Phil Neville as well as goalkeeper Tim Howard who could pose United a problem.

“Tim will be an obstacle as he’s a top keeper and has started the season in good form,” added Scholes. “Things probably didn’t go as well for him here as he’d have liked, but after joining Everton, he got his head down, worked hard and he’s done really well. It’ll be difficult to beat him on Saturday but hopefully we will do.”

RYAN'S ADVENTURES IN EUROPE

Ahead of United's return to Champions League action, we fired some quickfire questions at the club's most experienced campaigner, Ryan Giggs...

What was your first game in Europe?
At home to Atletico Madrid, a good side with players like Bernd Schuster and Paulo Futre. We needed to win well because we’d lost the first leg 3-0 away from home. Mark Hughes scored early on but we didn’t quite do enough to get over the line.

First away trip?
I honestly don’t remember... maybe Torpedo Moscow in the UEFA Cup. We lost on pens, I think, on a wet and miserable night inside a small, old stadium.

Favourite European goal?
I’ll have to go for the one against Juventus at Old Trafford in the 3-2 victory in 1997. That always brings a smile to my face.

Best European night at Old Trafford
I only came on as a substitute for the final 15 minutes but it’s hard to beat Barcelona at home in the 2008 semi-final. That was a special atmosphere.

Best away ground
I’ve played in so many. I like playing in Turkey, actually, because the atmosphere is so good. Galatasaray’s Al Sami Yen in 1993 sticks in the mind.

Toughest defender
Javier Zanetti. When I played against him in 1999 he was a right-back and he had everything – he was athletic, tough, intelligent, good going forward. He was brilliant.
