BOSS FULL OF PRIDE

Sir Alex is proud of the fact that United could have as many as eight representatives in Fabio Capello's England squad this weekend.

Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney are all in contention for call-ups.

"It's not a problem for us," explained the boss. "It's fantastic. We've produced more players for England than any other club in the world and we're pleased for the players because they deserve to be there. They're outstanding so we're all pleased."

However, the manager has tempered expectations of the youngsters. "Well, they've only played a couple of games," he explained. "They have potential and we're very enthusiastic about that potential and hopeful they can fulfil it. But the name of the game is what they achieve.

"There's a long way to go and some of their form may taper off and that's when the squad comes into play. But, at the moment, they're doing very, very well so I have to let that carry on."

EVANS FIRES GUNNERS WARNING

Jonny Evans has warned against under-estimating Arsenal ahead of Sunday's Old Trafford meeting with Arsene Wenger's side.

Although the Gunners arrive in Manchester without offloaded duo Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, nursing injuries to key personnel, such as Jack Wilshere, and contending with a number of suspensions, it would be foolish to write off a team that rallied to win at Udinese in midweek.

With United's own youngsters impressing after being thrown into the deep end, the Northern Ireland defender is fearful of a similar situation arising under Wenger's expert tutelage.

"I think it's going to be a much more difficult game than everyone is thinking," Evans told ManUtd.com. "Arsenal are a fantastic team and no matter who plays for them, Arsene Wenger has got unbelievable ability to bring through young lads.

"I know they've got a lot if suspensions but the lads who come in will be so well integrated into how the Arsenal system works. Arsenal do have a distinct style of play that they very rarely change from so I think that helps. When they come through the Arsenal youth or reserve teams, they know exactly how to play.

"He's still got a big squad there. Obviously they've lost two great players in Nasri and Fabregas but they've got great strength in depth in their squad."

NANI FANS' Q&A

Wing wizard Nani answers some supporters' questions exclusively for Red View.

Who is your best mate at Manchester United?
When Ronny [Cristiano Ronaldo] was here, him. I went to his house, we lived together for a while. We spent a lot of time together, with Anderson too, so he has been my best friend here. At the moment, I think everyone is the same. I get on well with everyone. Maybe I speak more sometimes with the Spanish-speaking ones like Antonio [Valencia], Chicharito, Patrice [Evra], Anderson. But I still speak with everyone. My English is not, very, very good. Sometimes it's not easy to speak quickly. I am involved with everyone. I don't have a special one to say we are best friends.

Have you set yourself a goals tally for the season?
No, no, no. My target is do much better than last season. If I do that, then I would be very happy and I think everybody will be happy as well. I'll try! I'll work hard every day and see how the season goes.

You're a skilful player: what's the best bit of skill you've ever seen on a football pitch?
I don't have one in particular, I appreciate every single skill. I love it when the striker or winger does the skill and makes the defender confused, so he doesn't know where to go. When I'm on the pitch, that's what I try to do: go left, then right, then left. Then after the skill I try to finish with something positive - pass or score.

What sort of music do you listen to and who's your favourite artist?
Honestly, everything. It depends on the moment and the feeling. I like everything. Before a game I go for something more exciting like R&B. Patrice puts nice music on in the dressing room.

Red View: Smalling on Vidic blow, Welbeck Q&A, first day video and more

SMALLING RISING TO THE OCCASION

Chris Smalling admits injury victims Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand will be missed but he's backing the young guns to cover their absence effectively.

The first-choice centre-backs are set to miss the clash with Spurs and captain Vidic could face several weeks on the sidelines. Smalling is likely to continue at right-back with Jonny Evans and Phil Jones forming a partnership in the middle.

"It is disappointing," he told ManUtd.com when asked about Vidic's injury. "He has been such an influential player for us over the years, especially during last season, when a lot of our stability was down to him so it is important that a lot of players step up to the mark now, but he is going to be a big loss for whatever period he is out. It is great that we can at least get one of our most experienced players back (Rio). They are both solid at the back and hopefully Vida will be back sooner than everybody thinks.

"There are a lot of opportunities given the amount of games we play," he reasoned. "There are going to be people who pick up injuries or lose form and I think it is down to us to step in and hopefully make the manager choose not to take you out of the team.

"It is great for my confidence to be able to feature in as many games, and hopefully a lot more games, than last season. There is always a pressure here and that drive to win, and I think a lot of the young players, including myself, will hopefully rise to that."

DANNY WELBECK: The last time I...

Went shopping? Last week with Tom Cleverley, I bought a jacket.

Watched a film?
The day before the West Brom game, I watched Seven Pounds, it's a decent film to be fair.

Downloaded something from iTunes?
Last week, the new album by Kanye West and Jay-Z, Watch The Throne.

Played a different sport?
Table-tennis on tour. I'm up there as one of the best players in the squad. Nani and Tom Cleverley are probably the top two, it's between those two.

Cried?
It's been a long time since I cried. I was probably close to tears when we were knocked out of the Under-21 Championships but I wouldn't say I was crying.

Became star-struck?
At Paul Scholes' testimonial when I saw Pele. I didn't get to meet him but he walked past me.

Went to a gig?
Trey Songz, last season.

Did any DIY?
In the summer, I put a table up in my house. There were no scratches, everything was perfect.

Cooked a meal?
At the back end of last season, when I was at Sunderland, I cooked for me and Jordan Henderson. He'll tell you I can cook a good chicken stir-fry!

BOSS HAS RESPECT FOR SPURS

Sir Alex expects Spurs to make life difficult for the champions when Old Trafford stages its first game of the Barclays Premier League season.

Tottenham haven't triumphed at the Theatre of Dreams since 1989 when Gary Lineker scored the only goal of the game. But Harry Redknapp's side have been tipped as outside contenders for the title by the boss and the sheer quality in their squad needs little introduction.

"Spurs did fantastically last year," explained Sir Alex. "They got to the quarter-final of the Champions League. I think that caught them out in the league because it drained their resources in terms of the size of the squad.

"They also had a few injuries. It's the same squad, really, apart from Robbie Keane going to LA Galaxy, but he wasn't a regular last season anyway. There's a lot of experience there with William Gallas and Younes Kaboul, they also have pace in the wide positions with Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe.

"Rafael Van der Vaart's a very good player. They have a terrific squad. It will be a hard game. It's always a hard game against Tottenham. We very seldom give them a drubbing. It's usually a tight match."

Red View: Vidic targets three points, Boss expects battle, greatest XI and much more

VIDIC: IT'S ALL ABOUT WINNING

Nemanja Vidic believes United are perfectly prepared for the start of the campaign - though he is wary of a potential upset against West Brom in Sunday's opener.

The Reds' skipper is fully focused on extending the 100 per cent run at The Hawthorns since the inception of the Barclays Premier League after enjoying a perfect record in terms of the pre-season.

"I don't think we have hit top form quite yet but I think we've done a very good job in pre-season and, fitness-wise, we're ready," Vidic told ManUtd.com on Friday.

"Starting the season away from home makes life a little harder - the first game is tough anyway, even at home - and West Brom isn't an easy place to go.

"It's always important to win matches but obviously the games only start to mean something when trophies are up for grabs or when you're playing for points in the league. It's good that we've won all our pre-season games, though - it means we're in a positive frame of mind going into the game at West Brom.

"Now we have to do all we can to win three points, which is the most important thing. It's not about how we play the game or whether or not we play good football - it's all about winning. This is the target."

BOSS EXPECTS BAGGIES BATTLE

Sir Alex appreciates the Barclays Premier League opener with West Brom will be a difficult start to the Reds' defence of the title.

Recalling the problems United experienced in last term's fixture, when Peter Odemwingie missed a penalty before Javier Hernandez snatched the winner, the boss realises Roy Hodgson's team will be formidable opponents on Sunday afternoon.

"It wasn't the real stuff against City [in the Community Shield]," conceded Sir Alex. "It'll be a tough game on Sunday.

"If you remember the game at West Brom last season, I thought we were pretty lucky. We won 2-1, they missed a penalty kick. The one thing that came out of it for us was confirmation that Chicharito is a real threat, the way he came on and won the game for us that day. So we expect a tough game."

The champions will take a 22-man squad to The Hawthorns for the game with Antonio Valencia, Darren Fletcher and Hernandez absent while Patrice Evra is rated doubtful due to a knee problem.

STARS SALUTE SCHOLES

The world of football has been paying tribute to Paul Scholes on his testimonial night at Old Trafford.

A variety of luminaries gave their opinions on the midfield genius to the official souvenir programme and we've reproduced some highlights below.

"Playing with Paul was a privilege. He made football look easy, which is a difficult thing to do" - Wayne Rooney.

"Paul is one of the most complete footballers I've ever seen. Of all the English players, I've always liked his style of play most" - Xavi.

"He is one of the best players I have ever played with. On the pitch his passing ability and heading ability was exceptional" - Tony Adams.

"I've always wanted to play like Paul. We more or less play in the same position and so I've been especially interested in how he plays" - Andres Iniesta.

"Every one of us should emulate him. We can all learn from Paul Scholes" - Edgar Davids.

"Scholesy was one of the most intelligent players I played with in my career. When you're a striker playing in front of him, he makes life easy for you." - Teddy Sheringham.

TRIO OUT FOR WEMBLEY

There was mixed injury news for United fans on Friday, as Sir Alex Ferguson addressed the press ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash with Manchester City.

The Reds boss told reporters that Michael Carrick, Javier Hernandez and Rafael are all set to miss the Wembley showpiece through injury. Carrick complained of "feeling a tightness in his Achilles" during Edwin van der Sar's testimonial game in Amsterdam on Wednesday and won't be risked, while Rafael isn't expected to play, either; he's still recovering from a knock picked up against Barcelona in last weekend's pre-season friendly.

Meanwhile, Javier Hernandez is "still two to three weeks away" and "should be back at the end of August". The Mexican suffered a concussion during the New Jersey leg of United's pre-season tour of the USA and the club are unwilling to take any chances rushing him back into action.

On the plus side, though, both Darren Fletcher (virus) and Antonio Valencia (ankle) are back in training and expected to challenge for first-team spots in the near future.

City look set to start with new signing Sergio Aguero on the bench while Carlos Tevez and Pablo Zabaleta remain on the sidelines.

THE SILLY SEASON

Why much of the summer speculation becomes tomorrow's fish-and-chip paper...

The Gossip, our feature on ManUtd.com, is still going strong ahead of the transfer deadline at the end of the month. An incredible 84 different players have been linked with the Reds since the window opened and that tally will, no doubt, creep closer to three figures before we hit September.

We all love a bit of transfer talk, indulging in imagining what X or Y would look like parading in a United shirt and how he would fit into the team. But keeping track of the rumours does highlight the folly of it all when we don't have games to demand our attention.

Three signings have been made but it's clear most of the names were never genuine targets for Sir Alex. So what has happened to some of the others?

A number have joined rival clubs - Fabio Coentrao, Raphael Varene (both Real Madrid), Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam (both Liverpool), Alexis Sanchez (Barcelona), Mirko Vucinic (Juventus) and Maarten Stekelenburg (Roma) amongst them.

Others opted to sign new contracts at their present clubs (including Barcelona prodigy Thiago Alcantara). A few of the prices quoted simply took the breath away - £70m for Lucas? £88m for Edinson Cavani?

But it's kept everybody occupied - journalists and fans alike - before the proper football gets back underway this weekend at Wembley. And, while some will be disappointed the boss hasn't splashed out well in excess of £1billion on all these fanciful signings, at least there's one sobering thought on the subject of the silly season. We'd bet good money that our neighbours from across the city have been linked with even more players in the press during the same period!
