SMALLING READY FOR EASTER ACTION

Chris Smalling is prepared to play alongside anyone of Sir Alex Ferguson’s choosing over the Easter weekend, as Manchester United return to action after a fortnight’s hiatus.

The international break has been anything but a rest for the versatile 23 year-old, after completing two full games for England away to San Marino (8-0) and Montenegro (1-1). He played with five different defenders in those fixtures but a rolling cast is something Smalling is accustomed to, even on a day-to-day basis at Carrington.

Smalling told Inside United: “In training we’re always swapping around so I’ll play with Phil [Jones], Rio [Ferdinand], Vida [Nemanja Vidic] and Jonny [Evans]. I’m always comfortable with whoever I play alongside.”

Such flexibility could be Sir Alex’s friend as the Reds kick off twice inside 48 hours, at Sunderland on Saturday at 12:45 GMT and away to Chelsea on Monday at 12:30 GMT. Some pundits have already predicted two completely different United line-ups but the real selections are unlikely to be revealed until the respective matchdays.

“It’s very rare that you’ll know much before a game whether you’re playing in it or not,” said Smalling. “For a Saturday game, we’ll stay in a hotel on the Friday night and then you’ll usually only know the team a couple of hours before the game. You just have to make sure you're prepared so you can be called upon whenever.”

The same requirement to be ready also applies to substitutes of course and Smalling has entered the fray from the bench on several occasions this season, as a mid-game replacement for Evans, Ferdinand or Vidic. So what are his tips on picking up the tempo of the match?

“You need to talk a lot straight away: to keep yourself and your team-mates alive to the opponents around you. You need to get your bearings because the strikers will be making all sorts of movements. If you make a mistake or you’re too slow you'll get punished, so you need to concentrate all the time."

CAPITAL GAINS

Ahead of Monday's trip to Chelsea, we take a brief look at the Reds' six previous FA Cup quarter-final ties against London sides, courtesy of United Review...

2010/11: United 2 Arsenal 0 - Fabio was the Reds' unlikely first scorer, tapping in after Manuel Almunia saved well from Javier Hernandez. Robin van Persie and his Arsenal team-mates couldn't find a way past Edwin van der Sar, though, and Wayne Rooney sealed the win.

2008/09: Fulham 0 United 4 - United cruised past the Cottagers and into the semi-finals to keep alive dreams of a potential quintuple. Everton scuppered that at Wembley but, on this day, anything looked possible as a Carlos Tevez brace inspired a comfortable victory.

2003/04: United 2 Fulham 1 - Defensive errors littered this performance but United had enough up front - namely, Ruud van Nistelrooy - to overcome a Fulham side that took the lead from the penalty spot. Van Nistelrooy equalised almost immediately before netting the winner after the interval.

1998/99: Chelsea 0 United 2 (replay) - After an eventful 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, United and Chelsea met again three days later. This time, the net bulged twice for Dwight Yorke - once after just four minutes and then, following a period of sustained Chelsea pressure, on the hour mark.

1994/95: United 2 QPR 0 - Goals from Lee Sharpe and Denis Irwin were enough to see off a plucky QPR side with Sharpe's celebration - an Elvis Presley impersonation with the corner-flag acting as a microphone - the enduring memory.

1993/94: United 3 Charlton 1 - Peter Schmeichel was dismissed shortly before half-time for handling outisde his penalty area but the 10-men Reds remained on course for the Double thanks to goals from Andrei Kanchelskis (2) and Mark Hughes.

VALENCIA: LEAGUE CLASH FEELS LIKE A CUP FINAL

Antonio Valencia says Manchester United's Barclays Premier League match against Reading will feel like a cup final.

With the Reds aiming to maintain a healthy lead over Manchester City at the top and the Royals lying just one place off the bottom of the table, three points are vital to both sides.

Despite their position in the league, Valencia still expects Reading to provide a tough test, especially after Brian McDermott was sacked as their manager earlier this week.

"When players know a new manager is coming in, it can act as an extra motivation and can have a positive effect on them," Valencia told United Review, the official match programme.

"Hopefully it doesn’t have too much of an effect on the match. The most important thing for us is just to stay focused on our game.

"It’s always tough to play sides who are fighting for their lives. With ten matches to go in the league, starting with Reading, every game is like a cup final for us and it’s the same for the teams at the other end of the table.

"We know Reading will come here with the aim of getting something out of the match. We have to be ready for that and make sure we’re just as motivated as they are. And we will be."

EVANS ANSWERS THE FANS

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has become a real fans' favourite during a season in which he's been a solid sidekick for Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the Reds defence.

So when Red Voices recently put a shout out for questions from supporters, there were plenty to pick from. Here are four that he was asked during a wide-ranging interview, which you can download and listen to at manutd.com/podcast...

Do you feel you have a good balance of Ferdinand and Vidic’s traits? Doron, London
I don’t really try to compare myself to Rio and Nemanja. They’re both unbelievable players. I just try to concentrate on my own game really. There are certain parts of their game which I do really admire, like Rio’s composure and Nemanja’s strength and his ability to attack the ball. So I suppose there are certain bits of them that I do look up to and think that’s the level I have to get to. But I don’t try to copy exactly how they play, otherwise I’d be taking my eye off my own game.

What’s your relationship with the other defenders like and how do you encourage each other in training? Gary, Bolton
The relationship’s brilliant. I think we’ve come to realise that the manager chops and changes his team and he tends to pick players on who the opposition are, rather than just on who’s playing well. Obviously if you are playing really well he’s not going to leave you out. But there’ll be certain games coming up where he’ll think, ‘I’ll play him in that game because it really suits him.’ I think that takes away any animosity among the lads - if someone’s taking your place in the team, you understand the manager’s doing it for the right reason.

You seem to have all the traits of a captain. Can you see yourself in that role in the future? Andrew, Dublin
I would like to be one day but I haven’t really got to the point where I’ve thought much about it. It’s obviously an ambition I had when I was younger, I wanted to be captain of Manchester United, but in recent times that has seemed like a long way off. You look at the captains over the last couple of years, they’re close to 30 before they get the nod, and I’m sure there are plenty of players above me who want it and are in line to get it before me.

Can you chip in a pound for my campaign to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to United? Martin, Manchester
I’d chip in more than a pound! I probably took it for granted how good Ronaldo was when he was here as a United player. In my first full season in the first team, he was scoring goals from all angles and I just thought this is what it’s like every week at Old Trafford. The range of goals and the way he scored them with ease really, I took it for granted. But I think now you’d love to have him back here. He’s gone on to become one of the best players in the world, it’s between him and Lionel Messi, so I definitely wouldn’t turn him away!

SCHMEICHEL ON SIR ALEX

Legendary Reds goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel reveals his admiration and respect for his former boss, Sir Alex Ferguson...

One of the great things Sir Alex is capable of is managing his players as the individuals they are. He doesn't care if he treats people differently - that's what he does.

For example, I don't think it's a coincidence that Eric Cantona, when he was at United, became the player that he always promised to be at his many previous clubs. That's purely down to the way he was managed by Sir Alex.

My relationship with Sir Alex wasn't all sweetness and light. The season is long and really, apart from maybe four weeks in the summer, it carries on and you're with football all the time. Along the way, things will happen so your meetings with the manager are not always pleasant. Sometimes he has to put you in your place. But most of the time he is fantastic and he doesn't do many things wrong.

I think what keeps Sir Alex going is the realisation that when he lets it go, he'll be left to wonder what to do with his time. Will he be happy playing golf or travelling the world? This is what he is - he is a football manager and for as long as he can do that, then he's going to do it. And we'll be so happy for him to do it too.

It's now more than 10 years since he announced he was going to retire in a year or two's time. I think he realised in that period of time that life after football probably wasn't as attractive as he thought it would be.

If you speak to him or see him today, you don't think that he's 71. I texted him on my way to the MUTV studio today and he replied straightaway. How many 71 year-olds do that? He's an older man who lives and works in a younger man's world and he keeps catching up with that.

Peter Schmeichel was speaking on MUTV's An Audience with... programme, earlier this week.

Red View: Nani and Young interviews, Rooney video and more

NANI: THIS IS MY TIME

Manchester United winger Nani is determined to make his mark on the club's bid for the Double after the disappointment against Real Madrid in midweek.

The Portugal international was the victim of a harsh red card that turned the UEFA Champions League tie in Real's favour but is hoping for more chances to impress during the run-in. Following a man-of-the-match display in the previous FA Cup against Reading, Nani is keen to continue the march towards Wembley with a starring role in the clash with Chelsea.

"I’d been working hard until that point, waiting for an opportunity, so when it came I was determined to make the most of it," Nani told United Review. "I scored a goal and I provided an assist so it was a brilliant night for me.

"Now my confidence is high and I think the best is still to come from me. This is my time and I think I can be important for the team in these big games. Because I was injured for two months, it means I’m fresh now when some other players are starting to get tired. I feel I’m in good form and I’ve nearly arrived at my peak. I think over the next few games I can surprise a few people.

"I want to show the manager that he can trust me and he can believe in me in every match. I want to show him my contribution can help win games. So I’ll keep working hard to make sure I’m ready to respond every time I get a chance."

YOUNG: WE'LL BOUNCE BACK

Ashley Young believes it is to United's benefit that the next fixture is another big one - with Chelsea coming to Old Trafford for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final tie.

The England winger will hope to start after coming off the bench during the Champions League exit to Real Madrid and confidence remains high despite the defeat with 10 men.

"Of course we were disappointed in midweek," explained Young. "But the club has bounced back many times and that is what we will be looking to do on Sunday. It is a big game but it is a chance to get further in the FA Cup. That is exactly what we are looking to do. We are looking to bounce back and I think you will see that on Sunday.

"Obviously, when you have a disappointment like we had the other night you want to get the next game straight away. We know it is another massive game and everybody will be fired up for the game on Sunday. That would have been the case whether it was league or cup. Everybody wants to get back to winning ways. That is what we are looking forward to doing."

Young appreciates that it will be another special occasion in front of the Manchester public with the aim to make the semi-finals at Wembley.

"When you are playing one of the top four, the intensity is going to be higher than normal," he opined. "The intensity will be even greater with it being the FA Cup. We have to go into the game full of confidence with the way we have been playing.

"In midweek, the boys were fantastic. It was a disappointing result but we have to move on from that. I am sure if everyone is concentrating and fully focused, we can get ourselves into the next round."

SHARPE'S UNITED MEMORIES

Lee Sharpe recalled his rapport with the fans and an embarrassing off-the-field episode for Roy Keane in an exclusive interview first shown on MUTV.

The former Manchester United winger stepped into the spotlight to talk about his rise from cleaning boots as a Torquay United trainee to taking on and beating Barcelona in the 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup final - his favourite match from a Reds career spanning six silver-laden years.

"The warmness and family atmosphere of the place was pretty special," he admitted. "I felt I had a pretty good rapport with the fans.

"I was always trying to interact with the fans and show how much I was in love with the game. I loved their response.

"The fans are absolutely immense - there are so many of them. They carried us through so many games. We had some immense nights kicking into the Stretford End and it was brilliant to share it with them."

You can watch Sharpe talking in more detail about his time at Old Trafford on ManUtd.com.
