Red View: Carrick interview, your Wembley XI, all the Champions League final quotes and more

Friday, May 27, 2011

REVENGE NOT ON CARRICK'S MIND

Michael Carrick insists revenge is not his main motivation ahead of the Champions League final at Wembley.

Barcelona defeated United in Rome two years ago with criticism, much of it rather unfair, fired in the Reds' direction in the wake of the 2-0 loss.

"We've watched bits of it," he explained. "I've watched it again myself. I find when you watch games back they're never as bad as you think and they're never as good as you think. That was the case with 2009. It really wasn't as bad as everyone made out.

"In a big game like that, little things change games. There were times when we were right in it. Obviously the result is what shines through, but it wasn't a total disaster. Saying that, there's things we want to put right and there's things we will put right."

Carrick has been in excellent form, particularly in Europe, and will be a key figure on Saturday in the midfield battle against Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

"They're top players," he admitted. "I enjoy watching them as much as anyone else when I see them on the TV, but when you're playing against them you have a job to do.

"You respect them for who they are and how good they are, but at the same time they're the opposition and when Saturday comes, you have to do your job.

"I feel good. The boss always says he wants the team to start hitting top form when it counts and we've managed to do that. When you're playing in a team that's playing well, it makes it easier as individuals to be on top of your game and thankfully a lot of us have been in the last few weeks. We need to make sure we are on Saturday."

YOUR TEAM FOR WEMBLEY

We asked for YOUR preferred starting XI for Wembley this Saturday on ManUtd.com and can reveal the results.

Edwin van der Sar is the choice to keep goal in the last game of his career with skipper Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand selected to continue their rock-solid partnership at the heart of the defence.

Regular left-back Patrice Evra gets the nod but there was plenty of competition for the other flank with the da Silva twins, John O'Shea, Wes Brown and Chris Smalling all options. The fans have opted for Rafael ahead of his brother Fabio.

In midfield, Antonio Valencia pips Nani to the right-wing slot with big-game player Ji-sung Park selected on the left. Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick are backed to carry on their good work against Chelsea and Schalke despite the claims of the likes of Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher.

Most supporters would like to see a 4-4-2 formation employed with Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez in tandem up front, even though Dimitar Berbatov picked up the Barclays Golden Boot this week. 82 percent of votes cast opted for the England striker and Mexican to start, with Rooney and Berbatov the next best suggestion.

Fans' team: Van der Sar; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Park; Rooney, Hernandez.

QUOTE..UNQUOTE IN THE BUILD-UP TO WEMBLEY

Who has been saying what ahead of Saturday's Champions League final.

"We'll find a solution to the game. It's about what's best for us; what's the best way for us to win the match. It will be down to how we operate in the attacking part." - Sir Alex Ferguson.

"In 2009, we never played. We never got on the ball. We weren't Manchester United that day. This time we will give a better account of ourselves." - Rio Ferdinand.

"Obviously Barcelona are a great team and they'll have a lot of possession in the game, but we'll also try to exploit their weaknesses. All teams have weaknesses." - Nemanja Vidic.

"It is in England so Barcelona are the away team. We have played many times at Wembley so that makes us feel at home and hopefully we can continue our good home record." - Ji-sung Park.

"2009 was a big, big frustration and I don't want to experience a feeling like that again." - Patrice Evra.

"I'll be very happy for Fabio if he gets picked. I'll be sad for myself if I'm not playing but I'll be feeling happy for him." - Rafael da Silva.

"If you look at European football then you'd say it's the ideal final. I think the purists and the neutrals would probably say Barcelona and United are the best two teams in Europe right now." - Michael Owen.

"If anyone can beat Barcelona with the talent they've got in their side, it's Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United." - David Beckham.

"If Barcelona turn up, they win. Barca have got to have a bad day for United to realistically have a chance. Either that or United get lucky." - Gary Lineker.

"United will play against Barca as they did against Arsenal, with three men in midfield. Ferguson is aware of the physical superiority of his team and knows that United's best chances may be from mistakes and corners. This strategy is key in the finals." - Cesc Fabregas.

Red View: Edwin prepares for farewell, Sir Alex's agonising decision, Berbatov's 20 goals and more

Friday, May 20, 2011

REALITY KICKS IN FOR EDWIN

Edwin van der Sar admits the reality of retiring from football is finally starting to dawn on him.

The popular keeper will play the final matches of a glittering career against Blackpool on Sunday and in next weekend's Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley. After making the decision earlier in the campaign, the 40-year-old is starting to come to terms with the fact that his time at the top is very nearly over.

"It's started to sink in now, yeah," he told United Review. "Maybe three or four games ago, I wasn't too bothered about it - maybe I was in denial! But now it's definitely closing down quickly.

"I'll try to keep some spare time, maybe do some coaching badges and some commercial stuff - maybe stuff for the club. I'll watch some games, spend some time with the family, play some golf, go for weekends away. Hopefully plenty! Of course I'll miss it, but you have to go at some point."

The Dutch giant is aiming to go out on a massive high by clinching a remarkable double next Saturday.

"It's only a great way to go if you win it!" he insisted. "But it's a good opportunity to go out in a good way. You might go out in the quarter-final or not win the league, so to win the league is an amazing feeling - especially because it was a special one for the club, being number 19 - and hopefully we can take another step towards the five European Cups Liverpool have as well."

SIR ALEX'S AGONISING DECISION

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he dreads having to pick his Champions League final line-up for the Wembley battle royal with Barcelona.

A number of quality players are not even going to make the bench and it is not a decision that the manager takes lightly, despite all his experience.

Ji-sung Park was excluded from the Moscow final with Chelsea while Darren Fletcher is short of match fitness this time around after missing out on Rome through suspension.

Back in the 1990s, Jim Leighton and Bryan Robson were both victims of tough calls from the boss in FA Cup finals.

When asked by MUTV if he'd already finalised his XI, Sir Alex replied: "Not entirely but we've got the nucleus who deserve their place but there are others who deserve a place too.

"But I can only pick 11 and that's the horrible part of being a manager now. At a cup final, it's absolute agony and something you don't relish at all but I have to do it.

"I have to pick a team and leave some very good players out. Hopefully, those who have all played a part in the European campaign this season will feel satisfaction at the end of the night at Wembley and we'll win the cup."

Red View: Blackburn team news, Giggs interview, Fans' new signing poll results and more

Friday, May 13, 2011

STRONG SIDE FOR ROVERS SHOWDOWN

Sir Alex Ferguson will travel to Ewood Park on Saturday with an almost fully-fit squad at his disposal.

The Reds need just one point to seal a record 19th English league title and the boss says there are "no new injuries" in the United camp.

He did concede, however, that he may rest Edwin van der Sar against Blackburn.

"Given the programme he's been through in the last few weeks, this may be an opportunity to give him a break," Sir Alex said. "They've all been important games."

While United need only a draw against Steve Kean's Rovers, the Reds boss insists he isn't taking the game lightly.

"We must approach the game the right way and play our strongest team. It's always a difficult game and Blackburn are fighting [to stay up]. It's a hard game for both teams but we go there with confidence after last Sunday's result."

Darren Fletcher is expected to be involved after playing for the reserves on Wednesday and the manager has confirmed Javier Hernandez is set to be in his starting line-up.

GIGGS: IT'S A TEAM EFFORT

Ryan Giggs believes it has been a team effort for United this season as the Reds look to seal the title on Saturday at Blackburn.

The veteran midfielder will equal David James' record for Premier League appearances if he plays at Ewood Park but it's trophies rather than personal accolades that he is pursuing.

With so many players contributing at different times to the campaign, Giggs appreciates the value of having such a strong squad when fighting on so many fronts.

"We are hoping to get it done and dusted this weekend," he said. "I wouldn't say it was a relaxed build-up. We still need a point. Blackburn are fighting for their lives and it is always a difficult place to go. They are local rivals, but we are in good form. We are playing well and are confident.

"It is always special to win the league but it means more when you haven't won it the year before. You are under a little bit of pressure to win it back. Chelsea got off to such a good start. People outside the club were doubting our ability as individuals and as a team. It is a nice way to end what we hope will be a very good campaign.

"It has been a team success. Over the past three or four years, if you asked the supporters who their player of the season was, Wayne would be last year, before that Cristiano. This year, if you ask 10 people, you would come up with 10 different answers for different reasons; Nani for his goals and assists, Berbatov for his goals, Hernandez for his first season, unbelievable, Nemanja, brilliant as always. Antonio coming back at such a vital stage. Edwin's consistency. The list goes on and on, but there's probably not one stand-out performer."

FANS REVEAL DREAM SIGNING

We asked ManUtd.com readers in midweek who their dream summer signing would be from a short-list of eight names - all players that have been consistently linked in the media over the past months.

There was an overwhelming response with over 16,000 votes logged and a runaway winner in the shape of Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

The Dutch World Cup star scooped 68% of the vote to finish well clear of his nearest challengers - Tottenham ace Luka Modric (12%) and Udinese forward Alexis Sanchez (8%).

The poll was only a bit of fun as we await any transfer dealings this summer with anticipation but it's clear the supporters have been impressed with Sneijder's form at club and international level.

Modric, Sir Alex's Ferguson's choice for Player of the Year, and Chile star Sanchez also received plenty of backing to finish ahead of the likes of Daniele De Rossi, Ashley Young, Jack Rodwell, Jordan Henderson and Sotiris Ninis.

26-year-old Sneijder certainly wouldn't come cheaply even if he could be prised away from Inter with some reports placing a £40million valuation on his head.
