EVANS PLEASED TO EXTEND STAY

Jonny Evans is keen to avoid feeling too settled, too secure, despite having just signed a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2016.

The defender, who is set to return against Swansea, penned a new deal on Friday but he insists it does not guarantee him a place in the team and he is taking nothing for granted.

“It's nice to get a new contract,” he told ManUtd.com. “It does give you extra security but the club could still decide to sell me in the summer if they want! I don't think it means an awful lot these days. But I am delighted with it. It gives me the security I need and it’s the place I want to play. I love the club and I am delighted to extend my stay.”

Evans can reflect on his best year yet in a United shirt as the Belfast-born defender came of age in 2012. No Reds centre-back has made more appearances in the last 18 months and that consistency is key to his fine form.

“As every game and season goes by I am improving,” he says. “As long as I feel I am doing that, I feel like I can contribute to the team. I really feel I am part of it. I don't feel like I am a youngster anymore who is filling in the gaps or gettting the odd game here and there. I want to be competing for a place every week.”

JONES LEARNS FROM THE BEST

Versatility can be a burden to players seeking to refine their craft in one position, but Phil Jones hopes to use that adaptability to his advantage and to become a more complete centre-half.

The 20-year-old believes that in the long-term he will settle in the heart of the defence, despite many of his early United opportunities coming at right-back or in midfield. And the Reds no.4 intends to use those broad-ranging experiences as fact-finding missions for future use.

“I’ve always said that my favourite position and the one I feel most comfortable in is centre-half,” he told Red View. “But if playing in different positions helps me become a better player then that’s great.

“It’s never easy going into a different position. I don’t kid myself that playing right-back one week and then centre-midfield the next can be difficult to do; it’s a completely different game, different circumstances and you have to adapt to it. If I am asked to play in a certain situation then I will play there because I enjoy playing football.”

There was debate over Rio Ferdinand’s best natural position as a young player. His technical quality leant itself to a midfield role, but he eventually fused ability on the ball with defensive skills to become a world-class, all-round centre-back. The two players are of different stock, but could Jones follow a similar route?

“I hope so,” he says. “If I could be anything like the player Rio is and has proven to be over 10 years at this club then I’ll be delighted. I try to learn from him in training and I listen to any advice that he gives me because I want to be as good a player as I can possibly be.”

REDS RELISHING REAL TIE

United’s players are looking forward to playing Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 after the Reds were drawn against the Spanish giants...

David De Gea
"It’s going to be tough – we know it will be hard. It should be a fantastic tie, though, and it’s one we’re really looking forward to. Madrid is where I was born; it’s my home town and I’m really looking forward to going back and being at the Bernabeu, which is an incredible stadium."

Javier Hernandez
"If you want to win this type of tournament, you need to beat the best teams in the world. We’re very pleased and very happy to be looking forward to that great game. To have one of the biggest clubs in the world like Real Madrid come to Old Trafford is going to be good. It’s a really good draw and hopefully we can go through."

JONES MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME

Phil Jones endured an injury-affected start to the 2012/13 campaign but is aiming to make the most of United’s busy festive fixture list – and he says the Reds must do the same having notched a six-point lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League table.

The 20-year-old defender, now fit again after a knee problem, made his first appearance of the season when the Reds visited Galatasaray in November. Last weekend, in only his fifth match since returning, he was given a taste of Sunday’s scintillating Manchester derby as a late substitute.

After such an epic high, Jones is naturally keen for more first-team opportunities in the crucial coming weeks.

“There are a lot of games coming up and I just want to be involved as much as I can be,” he tells United Review, the Reds’ official match programme.

“Sunderland is another really important game for us. They’re fighting for points at the other end of the table so we don’t expect it to be easy at all, but we have to make the most of the position we’re in.”

United edged six points clear of title rivals Manchester City after last weekend’s injury-time 3-2 triumph, but the Reds aren’t resting on that lead at a crucial stage of the league calendar.

“The manager talks a lot about the Christmas period being one of the toughest spells of the Premier League season,” adds Jones. “To be in a strong position at the turn of the year is vital. We’ve put ourselves in a good position and we need to keep it going now.”

YOUNG AND WELBECK ANSWER THE FANS

United and England team-mates Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck took part in a live webchat with fans on Thursday 13 December. If you missed it, here's an extract...

Is Patrice Evra a good DJ in the dressing room? Who would you replace him with? - Mustafa Mesic, Bosnia and Herzegovina

DW: I think I can speak for both of us here. We've had discussions recently and as for Patrice's skills... he has some good tunes but recently he's mellowed a bit. The tempo in the dressing room has slowed down. I'm not saying he's showing his age but I think the tunes are...
AY: Let me tell you. The tunes have slowed down and they're not the beat we need before we go out on the pitch. But he is a good DJ and he has lots of tunes.
DW: I think his playlist is too big and when he hits shuffle it lands on a few slower songs. I have to say, I like his music but it could be time for a change if Ash is putting himself forward.
AY: I've done it a few times and I've never had a complaint. Even Albert, our kitman, was tapping his foot when I played a few tunes once!

Which is your favourite movie of all time? - Lakshman Koundinya, India

AY: I've got a few, and really we haven't got long enough for me to tell you all of them. As a kid I used to love the Mighty Ducks movies and I'd watch them all back to back. There's another one called Smile Orange. It's a Jamaican film. If you get a chance definitely watch it. I must have seen it 100 times.
DW: It's hard to pick a favourite. Mighty Ducks is before my time!

If you weren't a footballer, what would be your occupation and why? - David Briggs, USA

DW: I think I'd be at university now. Both my big brothers went so I'd have followed them. I'm not too sure what I would have studied but I'd have liked to have gone.
AY: I would never have gone. Me and school didn't get on. I was good at school but I didn't enjoy it. I was an entrepreneur in the playground, though... I'd buy some cheap sweets at the shop and then make a profit by selling them to the other kids!

VACCINES MAN HAS UNITED FEVER

The Vaccines' front man Justin Young popped in at Old Trafford recently to chat to ManUtd.com about his beloved Manchester United.

Young and his band-mates have been busy, touring the UK and releasing their second album, The Vaccines Come Of Age, but he still found time to visit the Theatre of Dreams to shop in the Megastore and talk on camera about the title race, Eric Cantona and more.

"I don't have much time to come to matches, but I've been to about a dozen at Old Trafford over the last few years and I always get excited when I walk in," Young told us.

"I even got excited just walking into the stadium to do this interview!"

RAFAEL ITCHING FOR ETIHAD ACTION

Rafael is seeking instant reinstatement in Manchester United’s league line-up this weekend when the Reds head to the Etihad Stadium for a derby blockbuster.

The Brazilian right-back was among the players rested from the midweek defeat to Cluj in the Champions League but his absence from the last hour of the rollercoaster win at Reading last Saturday was a different matter.

Already on a yellow card, Rafael was the ‘victim’ of a rare first-half substitution as Sir Alex tried to seize control of a frenzied game and keep a full complement of players on the pitch. But although that tactical ploy paid off for the boss, many pundits would fancy Rafael – one of United’s best performers this term - to reclaim his place from Chris Smalling on Sunday.

“Every player wants to be involved, derbies are always great games to be a part of,” acknowledged Rafael in Inside United.

“It will be huge, as it is every time we play them now. It’s funny, though – I remember when I first joined United, the game against City was just a normal match. It wasn’t any bigger or smaller than most other fixtures, but now it’s probably the biggest one on the calendar. We’re hoping to get a good result there.”

While some might think City’s exit from Europe this week will give them an advantage in the 2013 title race, Rafael insists the Reds are also greatly focused on the league.

“At United we start the season wanting to win every competition we play in," he said. "But the league is special. Winning it is an incredible feeling and we want to feel that again. It’s important to us this season and we’ll battle as hard as we can to make sure we lift the trophy.”

EX-REDS: DEFENCE IS KEY TO DERBY SUCCESS

Three wise men - all of them Manchester United legends - share their opinions ahead of Sunday's match against City...

Arthur Albiston: "I think Sir Alex will go there with a big side. By that, I mean he'll favour tall players because City pose a lot of threats at setpieces - the goal we conceded there in last season's league game was a header from a corner. They are a physical team so you have to match that first of all. I think Sir Alex will go there with an attitude of, 'Let's go there and get at least a draw.' A win would be a great result and if we can stop conceding goals, we've got enough goal power throughout the side to do it. But a draw would be acceptable. We don't have to chase the game at this stage of the season."

Paddy Crerand: "A great pal of mine is a City fan and keeps saying that City, like United, aren’t playing as well as they can. Yet I’m pretty certain the title will be won by a Manchester club. You can’t discount Chelsea but United and City are favourites. So Sunday is important and it won’t be easy. Roberto Mancini has a tremendous team and a strong defence, while we’ve been shipping goals. There were signs that was changing for us with key defenders fit again but after a clean sheet against West Ham, we conceded some crazy goals at Reading! City will no doubt give the title another right good go but we’re in it for the long haul, and I hope we can strike the first blow on Sunday."

Gary Neville: "United have shown great attacking flair and character, but need to keep clean sheets. City’s success has been built on defensive solidity; they’ll know that as long as they stay tight at the back, the goals will come with the quality attackers they’ve got. It’ll be a huge game at the Etihad, and if United want to know how to win on Sunday, then just take a look at what Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid did against them in the Champions League – they shut off City’s space in midfield brilliantly. If you get in and around David Silva, Samir Nasri and Carlos Tevez, that will congest the middle of the park and halt Yaya Toure’s powerful, damaging surges. The best way to win there is to make sure you don’t concede. If United can keep a clean sheet, then the amount of attacking talent we have will give us a great chance."

RED VOICES: CITY SHOWDOWN

Red Voices, the official ManUtd.com podcast, saves the biggest and best game until last this week - namely the much-anticipated Manchester derby.

Before turning their attention to Sunday's game against City, our panel of three website journalists discuss the contrasting clashes with Cluj and Reading. But the season's first meeting with the Blues soon dominates the agenda for Steve Bartram, Nick Coppack and Adam Marshall. Guiding them through the debate is MUTV presenter Helen McConnell.

The other voices you'll hear on this week's podcast are those of Sir Alex Ferguson, reflecting on the defeat to Cluj, and former United strikers Andy Cole and Frank Stapleton who talk separately about the big derby.

SIR ALEX'S AWAY-DAY WARNING

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping his players can learn from November’s trip to Norwich City as Manchester United look to open December with a win at Reading.

The Reds lost the first away match of the season in the Barclays Premier League and the most recent one, the 1-0 reverse at Carrow Road, and even though each road trip in between yielded three points, only the victory at Newcastle was anything like comprehensive. United had to come from behind at Southampton, Liverpool and Aston Villa and were, as expected, pushed all the way by Chelsea at the end of October.

“I think away games are getting more difficult in the Premier League,” said Sir Alex on Friday morning. “Our game at Norwich is a good example of that. Norwich fought like tigers. They were really organised and motivated and made it a difficult day for us and I think we can expect the same at Reading.”

This Saturday’s hosts are in the relegation zone, only four points above last Saturday’s rock-bottom opponents QPR. But Sir Alex has seen enough in the Berkshire club to make him caution his men against complacency.

“When Brian McDermott became manager at Reading, it took him a little bit of time to get his ideas across but look at the second half of last season in the Championship – they came from nowhere to win the league. They’re definitely a club that are improving and although they’ve not had a lot of wins, they’re always hard games against them. I expect what we got at Norwich – a really difficult game.”

Whatever happens at Reading and elsewhere this weekend, the boss isn’t yet buying into the notion that only United or local rivals Manchester City can win the title in 2013.

“I don’t think you could be certain of saying it’s going to be a two-horse race at this stage," mused Sir Alex. "Over the years we’ve said that the top five or six are all capable of winning the league but eventually it ends up a two-horse race. Year after year it’s been like that – there was again space between the top two teams [United and City] and the others last year. The important thing to do is just look at yourselves – we want to be up there all the time and we need to stay up there. It’s not an easy league to do that in.”

DE GEA ANSWERS THE FANS

Reds goalkeeper David De Gea fields questions sent in by fans from around the world...

How big are your hands? What size gloves do you wear?
I've always had big hands, even when I was a kid. I guess I was destined to be a goalkeeper. I wear a size 10.5 glove.

How closely do you follow Atletico Madrid and what have you made of them this season?
I still look out for their results and follow their fortunes closely. Thankfully they're often on the television here in England so I can watch the games sometimes as well. They're doing really well this season - at the moment they're second in the league, so if they can keep picking up victories then who knows? There's no reason they can't battle it out with Real Madrid and Barcelona for the championship. The Atletico fans are superb - the support they give the players is amazing. Like United, it's a special place to play.

Who has the hardest shot in training?
This won't be a surprise but Paul Scholes has a fierce shot. Nani can also hit the ball well and Nick Powell has stung my hands a few times. To be honest, everybody strikes the ball well. There aren't many easy shots.

Your girlfriend is a singer, but how's your singing voice?
I'm all about stopping shots, not singing! I must admit, I've not got a great voice. She does her thing well and I do mine - it's better if we stick to what we're good at.

What would you be if you were not a footballer?
All I can remember is wanting to be a footballer. It's all I've ever wanted to do and it's hard for me to even consider doing anything else. I guess if football wasn't an option I would have concentrated a bit harder at school and put my mind to my studies. I probably would have gone to university and tried to attain a degree related to sport. I also enjoyed history at school, learning about important dates and events.

Have you been able to communicate with Shinji Kagawa and how do you rate him as a player?
You'd be surprised! Even though he doesn't speak Spanish and I don't speak Japanese we've still managed to communicate a little bit. He's a really nice guy and, like me, he's having classes and learning English. So we can communicate a little bit. Of course, it's no secret what a good player he is on the pitch. It's a shame he's been out injured recently because he was a very important member of the team at the beginning of the season. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

Do you have any specific routines or superstititions before matches?
I've got a lot of little things that I always try and repeat in the same way before a game but they're all small things and I don't want to give too much away by talking about them. It's more that I have a routine I try and stick to rather than any major superstitions.

What's the best Spanish restaurant you've found in Manchester?
There are a few but it's hard to find something really authentic. You can find a few Spanish places but nothing is exactly like home. It's okay, though: I'm not here to eat Spanish food!

WAYNE TARGETS RETURN TO THE TOP

Wayne Rooney is seeking a winning comeback with Manchester United against Queens Park Rangers after missing two consecutive defeats in the last seven days.

The Reds striker missed last Saturday's trip to Norwich City with tonsillitis and while he might have been rested from Tuesday's game against Galatasaray anyway, with Champions League progress already assured, he admits the second loss was also hard to take.

"We were still disappointed to lose the game, even though we’d already qualified in the Champions League as group winners," Wayne said on Friday. "Obviously last week [at Norwich] was a massive disappointment for us. After losing that one, this QPR game couldn’t have come quickly enough. We’re looking to get back out there in the league and try and get the three points."

Rooney acknowledges the extra incentive provided by this weekend's order of fixtures, with current league leaders Manchester City not playing until Sunday when they meet Chelsea.

"If we can get the three points, that will take us to the top again. It might only be for 24 hours but it’s always great to be there," he contemplated, before reminding the fans it's far from a formality.

"QPR last season made it difficult for us. They went down to ten men early on and got players behind the ball and made it difficult. I’m sure it will be the same this season.

"They haven’t got a manager at the moment but I’m sure whoever does take over from Mark Hughes will get them organised to play that way. We just have to work on what we think is the best way to win the game and concentrate on ourselves. I’m sure if we do that and we do that right, we’ll be okay to get the three points."

SIR ALEX: LADY CATHY IS THE REAL BOSS!

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson, on a proud day for the most successful manager in Manchester United's history - the day his bronze statue was unveiled outside the Old Trafford stand named in his honour.

Around 2,500 fans braved the Manchester weather to attend the outdoor event, along with Sir Alex’s family, his current squad and dozens of his former players, including Eric Cantona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“It's a really proud moment for me,” Sir Alex said, before joking: “Normally people die before they have a statue. I'm outliving death!

“The boss [Lady Cathy] is a fantastic person. Someone has to control me and she's the only one who can. She has promised that every Saturday morning she's going to come down and bow to the statue!”

SCHMEICHEL PROUD OF SIR ALEX

Legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was understandably proud to be part of another special day at Old Trafford with the unveiling of the new Sir Alex Ferguson statue.

The Dane was one of the VIP guests at the Theatre of Dreams on Friday and was quick to pay tribute to his former boss for transforming the fortunes of the club after taking over in 1986.

"It is a special club," he told Red View. "I’m happy for Sir Alex. One thing he said out there is normally when you get a statue like that, you’re dead but he gets to see these people turning up for the unveiling.

"He deserves that. He touched on so many lives – the people who work in the club every day, his staff, his players but, beyond all that, all the supporters of Manchester United and football in general.

"He has had an influence on their lives over many years and should be credited for a lot of what has happened in the Premier League with it now being the best league in the world. He saw that very early on, when he first arrived at the club, and started a process that was designed to have an effect many years later. When the whole culture of football had to change, he saw that and changed that."
