Red View: Boss demands better, George Best video, Wes Brown interview + more

Friday, November 26, 2010

SIR ALEX: TIME TO WAKE UP

Only goal difference separates Manchester United and Chelsea at the top of the table, but Sir Alex Ferguson insists his team must improve.

The United manager, a stickler for demanding nothing but the best, has called for his players to “wake up” if they want to prise the Barclays Premier League trophy away from the Londoners’ grasp.

“The last two performances in the league haven’t been good enough,” Sir Alex said in Glasgow this week. “We’ve not played well. We should have lost by six goals at Aston Villa but somehow we got a point out of it. And against Wigan we made things difficult for ourselves – we could have won by five or six.

“We’ve been a bit more fortunate than some of the other sides who haven’t played well, though. At least we took something from the games.”

That fighting spirit, the ability to grind out results even when the side isn’t playing well, pleases the boss.

“At least I know I’ve got players who are prepared to do something – and did something – about situations like the one we found ourselves in at Villa Park. That says a lot about the character of the human beings I’ve got, which is satisfying for me.”

Match Pack - United v Blackburn

WES: WE'RE READY TO POUNCE

Wes Brown, much like United in general this season, has taken time to get going, but he says he and his team-mates are primed to come good at a crucial stage.

The defender had played just twice by the time the Reds met Stoke City on 24 October, but since then he’s chalked up six appearances, five of those in the league.

“It’s been great to be back playing some games and I’m really enjoying things at the moment,” he says in Saturday’s matchday programme. “I’m focused on training hard and doing my best for the team.”

United go into the Blackburn game on an unbeaten run of 28 matches stretching back to last season, a commendable achievement given the unpredictable nature of the current campaign.

“Getting results is tough nowadays and we’ve seen some surprising results in the league this year,” he adds. “There are so many good players in the league now and anyone can beat anyone.

“We’d maybe have thought we’d be nine or ten points behind the leaders [after the draws we’ve had],” says Wes. “But we’re not, we’re still right in there. We know winning the title isn’t going to be easy, we’re just working hard on trying to play as well as we can so we can keep driving forward and winning games.”

EVANS: MY CONFIDENCE IS COMING BACK

United defender Jonny Evans reflects on his return to the team after a form-induced spell on the sidelines...

I was happy to get 90 minutes under my belt on Wednesday night, it gives me something to build on. As a defender, you always want to keep clean sheets. It gives you confidence.

Earlier in the season, I wasn't playing well, I don't know why. I made decisions that I wouldn't have made in the past - I gave away a penalty against Liverpool, for example, with a silly challenge.

We were conceding a lot of goals and sometimes people like to point a finger and say this and that. I tried not to let it affect me. I just got on with it and hoped that my form would come back.

When you see what has happened to Wayne Rooney, it does remind you how intense the spotlight at Manchester United is. Everyone's eyes are on you, no matter what. That is something that comes with being at a club like this. You can't let it get to you.

I don't think I have let it get to me, and I haven't moaned about not being in the team. I have worked as hard as always, in fact I have probably worked harder. Hopefully I will get the rewards for that.

The manager has always had faith in me. It is just a case of getting my own personal confidence back and getting back to doing what I can.

PARK: NO MORE SHOCK RESULTS, PLEASE

The current league campaign has thrown up plenty of surprises - and not just for United. But Ji-sung Park is hoping for no more upsets, and says concentration and focus are the buzzwords ahead of Wigan Athletic’s visit to Old Trafford.

United have won 11 games out of 11 against Wigan and scored a whopping 35 goals in the process. But the topsy-turvy nature of the 2010/11 campaign means the Reds simply cannot afford to take anything for granted.

“There have been so many surprise results in the league this season that, to underestimate Wigan, would be very dangerous,” he tells United Review . “They’ve had an up-and-down season so far, but that’s exactly why we need to prepare well and focus on the game. We’ve had plenty of warning signs already so we need to concentrate and not think to ourselves that this is an easy three points.”

That said, this weekend must be seen as an opportunity for United to crank up the pressure on second-placed Arsenal - they're playing Tottenham this weekend - and league leaders Chelsea who travel to Birmingham.

“We’re only three points behind Chelsea, so that’s a real positive," adds Ji. "We know we’re capable of going on a winning run.”

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS: NANI

The Reds winger - 24 this week - gives us an insight into his life off the pitch...

What’s your favourite TV programme?
In England, it’s The X Factor . In Portugal, I like our soaps. They’re not like the English soaps, like Coronation Street and Eastenders. They’re more like comedies.

What do you miss most about home?
My mum and my family.

Can you cook?
Yes, I like Portuguese food. My favourite dish is feijoada (stew of beans with beef and pork). I have a machine in my house that does everything! It’s from Portugal, it’s called a Bimby. If you want to make feijoada, they say put this ingredient in, then half an hour later put this in... and it does it for you. It’s nice.

What was the last book you read?
I've got Giggsy’s book (My Life, My Story) and I’ve been reading that.

Who’s your best friend at United?
I have lots of friends… the ones who speak Portuguese are all close, but I get on with the English-speaking lads too; Fletch, O’Shea and the younger lads especially. Rio is like one of the young lads - he likes to have a laugh.

If United got to the Champions League final and you only had one ticket to give away, who would get it?
[Laughs] Only one?! My mum.

BRILLIANT BEBE DOUBLE INSPIRES RESERVES
Barclays Premier Reserve League: United 3-1 Wigan

An outstanding pair of goals from Bebe helped United Reserves to notch an impressive victory over Wigan Athletic.

The Portuguese winger opened the scoring with a rocket in the fourth minute. Latching onto Will Keane’s flick-on, Bebe bundled his way through three challenges and smashed a brutal effort into the roof of the net from just inside the area.

Ben Amos assisted Bebe's scorching second goal. Missed by Wigan's Jordan Mustoe, the United goalkeeper's huge kick bounced and was dropping on the right-hand edge of the Latics’ area when Bebe unleashed an incredible volley which arced just inside the far post.

Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of the raw talent which lurks inside the young Portuguese winger, and this volley was the most glaring example yet of the brilliance Bebe can call upon.

Bebe's team-mate Ryan Tunnicliffe told MUTV: "No-one really knows what Bebe can do yet - but he showed tonight [Thursday] what he's all about. In the warm up, he was hitting them and four out of five were going in the top corner. So we knew if he got a chance he was going to put it away."

PHELAN CALLS FOR AWAY DISPLAY

Mike Phelan is hopeful the players can put on a show for United fans to "shout about" at Villa Park on Saturday.

The Reds have won just one of six league away games this season and the assistant manager is keen to see that tally doubled against Gerard Houllier’s Aston Villa.

"Players and staff all understand we need to start winning games away from home," said Phelan on Friday.

"We want to put on a performance which gives our travelling supporters something to shout about. If we approach the game right, and we get the little bit of luck that you need away from home, then we can push forward."

Statistics are certainly on United’s side in Saturday's fixture, with 11 wins in 18 Premier League meetings at Villa Park. The last league defeat there for Sir Alex Ferguson's side was on the opening day of 1995/96, when the boss fielded "kids" like David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville. The latter pair are still at the club, of course, 14 years after defying the critics to win the Double in that same season.

“That just shows you the progress we make here," said Phelan. "Those kids are grown men now and they’ve won a lot of things since. They’re eager to keep doing that and keep winning. That's what we're looking for. We’re probably going to introduce a new batch of kids over the next few years so we’ll see what happens."

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: CHICHARITO

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez reflects on how his life has changed, from almost giving up on football to becoming United's first Mexican player…

How would you describe yourself to United fans as a person and a footballer?
I enjoy playing football and I always want to be a happy person. I’m quite quick and I like to score goals, though the team is always most important to me. I’m a family man, I approach everything in my life in a positive way, and I want to take full advantage of the opportunity that God has given me. That means working hard, being professional on and off the field, and enjoying myself.

When did you first hear that United were interested in signing you?
[United’s head scout] Jim Lawlor spoke to me about a year ago. He said he’d been watching me play for Chivas de Guadalajara and told me United were interested, so I was very excited. Before that he had spoken to my father, and when my father told me the news I cried because I couldn’t believe it. As a kid in Mexico, my dream was to play for the best team in Mexico and then move to Europe. But to be told not just any European team, but Manchester United, were interested, was unbelievable.

It’s amazing that you considered quitting football altogether 18 months ago – can you tell us about that?
I was not getting many opportunities in the Chivas first team, which led me to ask myself, "Is this the life I want to lead?" I questioned whether I was good enough to make it as a footballer. But I talked with my family, who said I needed to be patient, work hard and enjoy all the things involved in the game: not just playing in matches but going to training, resting, media work – everything that comes with this profession. When you’re playing it’s about learning to accept the bad times as well as enjoying the good. Confidence is all part of football. Nobody here is going to play 38 great games a season, we’ll all have good and bad days. But the key when you’re not playing so well is to find out why and to work on those aspects of the game that need improvement so that you can get better day by day.

It’s been a remarkable couple of years for you since then…
Yes, it’s really amazing how much my whole life has changed: I played a lot of games in Mexico, went to a World Cup and now have this incredible opportunity at United. It’s unbelievable and I’m thankful to all the people who believed in me, especially my family, without whom I would not be here.

Look out for the full Chicharito Q&A on ManUtd.com next Wednesday.

SORRY TO SEE SOLSKJAER GO

MUTV's David Stowell blogs on this week's news that Reds legend and Reserves boss Ole Gunnar's going home to Norway, to manage Molde...

As a big fan of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, I'll be sad when he leaves United in January.

I remember when I first met Ole. He was funny, humble and focused. You could see the determination etched on his youthful face. He wanted to succeed (which back then meant getting fit to play again). I interviewed him when he retired and he was emotional but sensible. He knew he had a chance to re-establish himself in football and put that intelligence into play as the boss. He was grateful for the opportunity but admitted apprehension. He admits a lot. That's his way.

In a world where some fans feel a big void between footballers and reality, Ole's a genuine guy who is all sweetness and light until he wants to make his point – then he makes it. That summed up his playing career too. Many times he found himself on the bench, behind other frontmen in the pecking order. Instead of throwing the toys out the pram, he made his point with his shooting boots. Forest away, anyone?

Now, after over 60 competitive games in charge of the Reserves, he feels it's time to move on. Football's coming home for one of United's most gentlemanly figures. Ole's going back to where his incredible football journey really kicked off. United's loss is Molde's gain, but I have a funny feeling we've not seen the last of him. Good luck Ole.

SCHOLES: WOLVES COULD HURT US

Paul Scholes is expecting Wolves to attack United at Old Trafford on Saturday, just as they did in last week's Carling Cup encounter.

The Reds beat Mick McCarthy’s side 3-2 but had to work hard for the victory against an extremely resilient outfit. Although Scholes did not feature in that match, he is fully aware of the threat that Wolves pose and is anticipating an equally positive approach from the visitors.

“I know they haven’t had the best of starts this season but they’ve got players who can hurt you,” Scholes said.

“They showed they are capable of scoring goals at Old Trafford, they managed two, and I’m sure they’ll have a go on Saturday as well.”

The 35-year-old Reds midfielder also shrugged off suggestions that Wolves are an overly aggressive side, claiming that teams simply employ different styles of play.

“There are some teams that might not play the most attractive football but you have to find a way of winning games,” Scholes added.

“Their managers want to get the best out of them and find the best way of winning games and they do it their own way. It’s up to us to be able to play against that and find a way of winning.”

Match Pack - United v Wolves

BEBE'S FIRST STEPS

United's summer signing from Portugal raised his profile again this week when he scored in the Champions League against Bursaspor. But how much do you really know about Bebe? If the answer's 'not much' then read on...

How would you describe yourself?
I am a humble person. When United signed me, it was because they believed in me; give me some time and I will provide goals for the club and show the fans it was worthwhile signing me.

Can you tell us a little bit about your early life?
The streets that I come from on the outskirts of Lisbon are very poor – I had nothing. But I am a good person in general and I want to show people that I can fight all the adversities I have had in my life. That’s why I am here.

Did you ever live on the street or is this a myth?
No, this is not true, I have never lived on the street. I had a lot of difficulties in my childhood and I had to go into a home when I was nine years old [this was the Caso Do Gaiato institution, which provides a home for children whose parents or guardians are unable to look after them]. Before that I was living with my grandmother, but there were four of us brothers living with her and she had no means to care for us all. That is why I had to go into the home. I lived there until I was 20 – when I left, it was to come here to Manchester.

Where did you learn to play football?
When I was young, at first I preferred playing basketball, but my older brother played football. I watched his matches and became interested in football. I started playing for my first proper team when I was 12 or 13. I started playing for the Estrela da Amadora [Portuguese Third Division side] junior team, and I was the best goalscorer and player, so the manager put me in the first team.

From Amadora you joined Vitoria de Guimaraes, and soon after that United came knocking...
Yes, I was playing for Guimaraes in pre-season, and in all the matches I was playing well and scoring goals. Suddenly Jorge Mendes [Bebe’s agent] told me about the deal. I was very happy at the time, I didn’t expect it. It was like a dream to me. Everybody dreams to come to United.

SMALLING'S A GOOD SPORT

Football isn't the only game Chris Smalling enjoys or excels at…

What other sports are you interested in?
I like golf, although I’m not as good as some of the boys here. I’m a big tennis fan, too. I went to Wimbledon a few years ago and had a great day. I like table-tennis, too - there’s a competition between the lads and I’m ready for any challenger. I was a national judo champion when I was younger. I started when I was about six or seven and quit just before I joined Fulham. I’ve got medals somewhere.

Which TV shows and music do you like?
I like watching The Inbetweeners and Entourage. When I was away with the England U21s in Romania we were all trying to download The Inbetweeners . It’s one of the funniest things on TV. Music-wise, it's usually R&B. I like Jay-Z and Kanye West, and Tinchy Stryder has done good stuff.

Who are you closest to in the squad?
I get on well with everyone, but I’ll say it’s probably Wes Brown, Kiko Macheda and Jonny Evans.

Who’s the toughest player to face in training?
I’d say Nani. He’s not the biggest, but he’s strong on the ball and quick – two qualities centre-backs hate.
