Red View: Giggs on diamonds, Anderson Q and A, Chicharito goals video and more

GIGGS: DIAMONDS ARE NOT FOREVER

Ryan Giggs insists width will always be important at Manchester United, despite the manager's recent decision to employ a diamond formation in games against Newcastle United, CFR Cluj and SC Braga.

The diamond eschews wide men in favour of more bodies in the central channel but Giggs, who was perhaps the archetypal modern winger for more than a decade, says there's no need for fans to panic. Wingers, he says, are here to stay.

"I think it's important to have flexibility," he told ManUtd.com and PA Sport. "In the game against Newcastle at St James' Park, that first 20 minutes was probably the best football we've played all season. That was with the diamond.

"With Antonio missing the game and Ashley Young injured we were short of width a little bit. So the diamond made sense and it means we have that flexibility now.

"Wayne can drop deeper, Shinji Kagawa can play in the majority of midfield positions, Tom Cleverley can play behind the strikers... we have the sort of personnel where we can chop and change and play different systems.

"Maybe we'll need to use it in some big games - you might see it in Europe - but United, more often than not, will play with wingers."

ANDO ANSWERS THE FANS

Brazilian midfielder Anderson responds to questions posted on the Reds' official Facebook page, facebook.com/manchesterunited...

Who inspired you to play football? - Josh Abraham
It was always in me - I always wanted to succeed at football, not just for myself but for my family as well. My family did not have a lot when I was growing up and I wanted to help look after them and provide for them. So I drove myself on wanting to succeed.

Who was your favourite player when you were growing up? - James Reardon
I had two - Rivaldo and Ronaldinho. I admired Rivaldo for his technique, his passing and his aggressive way of playing. Ronaldinho has great skills and he is a great guy. He was always happy on the pitch and always had a big heart.

Why did you cut off your hair? - David Khan
[Laughs] I don't know! I like my hair now, but I have to say I'm going to go back to my old style because I miss it; my mum told me I had to cut it! Next season I'll definitely grow it back.

Who is the best player you have played with and against? - Lin Ginger
The best I have played with is Cristiano Ronaldo. He is unbelievable - I've never seen another player like him. The best I've played against is 'Lass' [Lassana Diarra]. He was at Portsmouth for a bit and then Real Madrid. He was very tough to play against, but I always enjoyed matches against him.

What's your best moment as a Red? - Shadrach Nyarkoh Mensah
The Champions League final in Moscow [in 2008]. I came on right at the end of extra-time and never touched the ball - I just took a penalty! It was nerve-wracking but the feeling when we won was amazing. The picture I have in my mind of that night is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

FOCUS ON MICHAEL KEANE

MUTV's regular feature puts United's younger players under the spotlight...

First team played for?
South Manchester. I was playing football with my friend [and brother Will] in a local field and he asked us to come along to his team and we stayed there for two years.

Signed for United...
I was just playing for South Manchester in little tournaments and I think we got scouted four times before we actually came. Once we came here, we just never looked back.

First player you idolised...
Rio Ferdinand was the main one when I was young. I always looked up to him.

What are your strengths?
I would say my composure on the ball and my heading.

Biggest achievement...
There's a few of them - winning the FA Youth Cup as it hadn't been done for a while before we won it and obviously making my debut for United [at Aldershot]. I couldn't choose between them.

What is your career highlight so far?
I would say playing against Newcastle [in the Capital One Cup this season]. After the game, we knew we had done well as a young team and that was the best feeling.

Why do you love football?
Just coming in every day and this is what you love to do. You want to do it for the rest of your life and don't want to go back to a job where you can't play football.

What don't you like about football?
Interviews! [Laughs] Probably getting tickets for people. It's a bit annoying as you want to focus on the game but you have to go in and sort those tickets out. If I had to say anything, that would be it.

What are your career ambitions?
To play for the Manchester United first team and, you never know, maybe the England senior team in the future.

Red View: Scholes' warning, Made of Manchester, Owen video and much more..

SCHOLES' STOKE WARNING

Paul Scholes fears Stoke City could be inspired by Tottenham's recent win at Old Trafford and has warned his United team-mates to expect a tough test on Saturday.

The Potters travel north knowing they have never earned a single point at the Theatre of Dreams in Premier League history, losing four matches and conceding nine goals in the process. However, following a recent shock defeat to Spurs, Scholes is wary of another slip-up and insists United must start well against Stoke.

"Yes, they probably will be inspired by Tottenham, by the first 20 minutes especially," Scholes told United Review. "We can't let that happen again. Stoke have got some quality players now.

"They have had good players over the last couple of years, don't get me wrong, but I think they've stepped up even more now. It's a game we'll be hoping to win but it's one we know won't be easy."

Since gaining promotion to the Premier League in 2008, Tony Pulis has arguably drawn the blueprint for clubs hoping to cement themselves as a top-flight team, despite drawing criticism from some corner for their unapologetically direct style of play. But as Scholes knows, success in football is driven by positive results and the Welsh manager knows exactly how to get those from his squad of burgeoning talents.

"It's a credit to him, to his players and his staff. I think in the first year or two after a club is promoted it's always about survival. But now he's taken Stoke up to a level where we just don't expect them to be down struggling near the bottom these days.

"I don't think anybody expects that with the quality of players they've brought in. They're more likely to be at least a top ten side, maybe even top six or seven. That's how far they've come."

FOCUS ON SCOTT WOOTTON

MUTV's regular feature puts United's younger players in the spotlight...

First team played for?
Wallasey Wanderers. They were just my local team and only 10 minutes from my house.

Signed for United...
I was 15 and just about to turn 16.

First player you idolised...
Rio Ferdinand. Always - not just at United. Just growing up as a kid, I loved the way he played.

What are your strengths?
Probably reading the game. I'm quite composed, have a decent range of passing plus heading and tackling. Scoring every now and again! (Laughs).

Biggest achievement...
Probably making my debut in Gary Neville's Testimonial. Also coming on against Barcelona in that game in Sweden in the summer.

What is your career highlight so far?
Maybe scoring on my debut for Tranmere. They are my local team and are only five minutes from my house so, to make my professional debut for that club, and to score the equaliser late on was pretty special at the time.

Why do you love football?
It's part of life really. Since I was a kid, my Dad, Grandad, all my mates and cousins have always had a team and it's just part of life as you grow up really.

What don't you like about football?
Losing. The feeling after the game and on a Sunday if it's a league game. Getting beaten doesn't set you up for a nice weekend.

Best friend in football...
Robbie Brady.

What are your career ambitions?
I just want to have the best career possible for myself. Hopefully at this club but, if not, at the highest level.

Red View: Rafael's a true Red, Goal of the Month video, Powell interview + more

Friday, October 5, 2012

RAFAEL PROUD TO BE A TRUE RED

Rafael admits he's honoured to pick up ManUtd.com's latest Player of the Month award.

The Brazilian started five of the Reds' six games in September and impressed the website's readers enough to edge out Paul Scholes as the month's star man. In doing so, the right-back became only the third defender to win the award since its 2007 inception.

"I'm very happy to win this award, especially since I found out that defenders never win it," Rafael laughed. "It's just an honour to win, especially to beat Paul Scholes, and I'm very proud.

"It was a good month for me, very consistent, playing many games and of course scoring the goal at Liverpool was the high point for me. I think scoring at Anfield probably helped a lot with the voting!"

Now 22 and approaching a century of appearances for the club, Rafael revels in the relationship he has built with United supporters since arriving from Fluminense.

"It's great to win something voted by the fans," he said."The supporters have helped me since I came here and I'm very happy with that.

"Since I arrived here, the fans have been amazing, singing songs for me or stopping me and telling me I'm a true Red! I've been coming here to training since I was 15 years old, a long time, so I feel like I am a true Red."

POWELL ADAPTING TO OLD TRAFFORD

United new-boy Nick Powell answers questions posted on the club's official Facebook page...

What's the biggest difference between Crewe and United? (Tran Hoang Long)
Just the intensity of things here when it comes to training and matches. That's no disrespect to Crewe because it's where I grew up and the people there and the club helped me get to where I am today. But as I said before, things are on another level at United and I know I need to be on my game all the time.

Are there a lot more goals to come from you this season? (Ashdale Wilson)
I hope so. I didn't know how much I was going to be involved this season but now I've got a taste of the goals, I'm hoping I can get a lot more game-time and score a lot more goals. I've got a target in my head but I'm keeping it to myself for the moment!

Who has had the biggest influence on your career so far? (Joel Holmes)
I'd have to say the youth-team coaches at Crewe, James Collins and Neil Critchley, who I grew up with; Dario Gradi, who obviously has such a legacy at the club, and now, and hopefully for the future, Sir Alex Ferguson and the older pros like Scholesy and Giggsy. I must mention my mum and dad as well - they took me everywhere for football when I was younger and have been through everything with me.

Who's your best friend at Old Trafford? (Ben Ainsworth)
I mix with all the lads. I get on well with Sam Johnstone, Danny [Welbeck], Tom [Cleverley]... all the young English lads, but I speak to everyone. I'm also good friends with a lot of the guys in the Under-19s through England, like Jack Barmby, Luke Hendrie and Ryan Tunnicliffe. Everyone gets on with everyone though because there's such a great spirit here.

LINGARD LOOKS FOR BREAKTHROUGH

Jesse Lingard speaks exclusively to Red View about life as a young player at United...

Have you been training more with the first team this season?
A lot more initially but not so much since the reserves' season started. Before the games in the Under-21s league, I train with the reserves but I'm still with the first team now and again.

Are there any differences between the new Under-21 league and the old reserve league?
There aren't many, but you can have three over-age players and an over-age goalkeeper in your team. We'll also get to play some games at the first-team stadiums [instead of alternative grounds like Altrincham] so that will be a good experience for us younger players. On the summer tour, we played in a lot of stadiums so we should be used to that.

And Old Trafford will stage some of the matches if we progress to the latter rounds...
I played there in the FA Youth Cup a couple of seasons ago and for the reserves too last term. It will be good to play there again as it will help us get used to the pitch - good preparation if we then get called up for the first team.

Which is your preferred position?
Well, between attack and midfield. In the pocket there. Similar to Shinji Kagawa. I really like the way he plays.

Are you seeing almost a conscious change tactically to play more like that?
That's what most teams are starting to do - put people between the defence and attack so they can't be marked and can get on the ball and create from there. Andres Iniesta and Xavi have been doing it for years at Barcelona.

And the manager may have been taking a long-term view on this as he knows he's got small skilful players like yourself and Larnell Cole coming through..
Rene [Meulensteen] has been trying to build it into us slowly so we're ready for it when we're older. Rene has been there all the time with us and said it's all about 90 per cent passing and 10 per cent skills. We've just got to play together and work hard in our team this season.

So what are the aims for this season?
It would be good to win the Under-21 league, it's a new one for the club, but we'll see. It was good to win every cup we lifted last season so hopefully we can do it again this year.
