ANDERSON: WE MUST PERFORM

After a run of facing the Barclays Premier League's top teams, Anderson says it's vital Manchester United don't take anything for granted against Norwich City.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men have already recorded impressive victories over the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea - all top five sides last season - but were held to a draw at Stoke City last Saturday and surprisingly pegged back by FC Basel in the midweek Champions League clash.

Anderson is hoping the team can maintain a near-perfect home league record - stretching back some 18 months - not least because anything less than a win against the Canaries could result in the Reds relinquishing pole position in the Barclays Premier League.

"It doesn't matter who you play in the league, you always have to play well," the Brazilian told United Review. "I haven't seen much of Norwich, but I know they are a strong team who will come here and battle. Whenever you play at home you have to perform and we are always confident at Old Trafford in front of our fans.

"It's important to be strong at home and our record has been amazing for a long time now. You feel more relaxed, more comfortable when you're at home and you have that extra spring in your step. It's important we show that on Saturday and keep our good run going."

SIR ALEX: MANAGER HAS TO BE KING

Sir Alex Ferguson has reiterated his long-held belief that nobody is more important than the manager at a football club.

The United boss, who is approaching a remarkable 25 years in his post, has praised both his Manchester City counterpart Roberto Mancini for his handling of the Carlos Tevez situation this week and also Saturday's opposite number Paul Lambert for his work at Norwich.

Although not wishing to be drawn on the Tevez saga, Sir Alex did state: "I can see Mancini is showing strength and character. Strength is important in today's management. We all experience our own difficulties in management and you cope with it the best you can. In my own experience, strong management is important. No-one is more important than the manager at a football club."

Paul Lambert is the latest fellow Scot to pit his wits against Sir Alex in the Barclays Premier League and the boss has been impressed with the former midfielder, a Champions League winner with Borussia Dortmund in 1997.

"I remember Paul as a kid at St Mirren and the next time he faced me, he was at Dortmund when we played the 1997 semi-final," said Sir Alex. "He's one of the few Scotsmen to win a European medal outside a Scottish team. He's started out well at Norwich, they're playing with a great sense of purpose and you can see progress every week. It's been a good move for the lad."

EVANS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS

Jonny Evans tackles fans' queries on ManUtd.com's official message board ...

Will Barcelona be the team to beat in Europe this season? - Ali Adel Mohamed
It's hard to look past them, although I think Real Madrid have also made big strides. Barcelona are certainly the benchmark, even before they signed Cesc Fabregas. It's incredible they thought they needed to improve their squad by signing both him and Alexis Sanchez. But we've improved as well. Obviously you can't read too much into our pre-season friendly against Barcelona, but it was nice to get one over them, and we played in a different way to the Champions League final, so that was encouraging.

What went through your mind when Torres missed his open goal? - Kontosh
I couldn't believe it. I just felt like we'd been let off the hook. It was strange. As he's gone around the goalkeeper I stopped, and I think everybody else did as well. We were just waiting for him to slot it in... then he's missed it, and you're thinking, "Did that really happen?"

When will you score a goal? We're still waiting! - Aymen_H
I was talking about this the other day with my girlfriend and some of my friends. They asked what I'd do if I scored... and I have no idea. It's about three-and-a-half years since I last scored, at Sunderland, so I think I'd just have a shocked look on my face!

BOSS PREACHES CAUTION

Sir Alex is not getting carried away with United's flying start to the season as he admits there are plenty more hurdles to overcome.

The Reds have won all five Barclays Premier League games for the first time under the boss with Stoke next to stand in the champions' way on Saturday. Yet the manager still believes his team will improve in the New Year, once the league has really started to take shape.

"It's only five games of course and we're delighted at that," explained the boss. "It's not normal for us to do it. We did change the dynamics of the team in terms of the early-season some years ago - we tried to address that when Chelsea made those flying starts.

"In the first two years, we didn't catch them - they were off and running before we'd got out of the blocks ourselves and we couldn't afford that. The third year, we addressed that and our start to the season was much better. In the competitive league we're in now, I think we do better in the second half and I think we'll do better in the second half again this season. At the moment, it's only five games - there are a lot of hurdles to navigate.

"I always look at the league then and see whether we have a chance or an uphill fight. We've had all the big teams at home so far and if you think in the second half of the season we're going to have to go to all those grounds. So hopefully our second half is good."

RIO FERDINAND Q & A

Rio Ferdinand recently took the time to answer a few questions posted by fans on the club's official Facebook page, www.facebook.com/manchesterunited ...

What's the most challenging thing about being a player at Manchester United?
It can take time to get used to the pressure that comes with pulling on the United shirt. I remember when I was at West Ham and we'd go to somewhere like Old Trafford; before the game, we'd be delighted with a draw. But here, even if you're losing 1-0 with just 10 minutes left, we always think about winning.

Who is the most difficult forward you've had to defend against?
My former United team-mate Louis Saha, now at Everton of course. He's quick, he's strong, he's aggressive, he hits the ball cleanly with both feet, he's great in the air... if I was building a prototype of a perfect number nine then I'd look to Louis.

Are you planning to go to any events at the 2012 Olympics in London?
I'd love to go to the 100 metres athletics final. It would be great to see Usain Bolt go through the finish line in about 8.5 seconds!

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have really impressed the fans. How highly do you rate them?
They're top quality players and they can both play in different positions. They can both play at right-back and Phil can also play in midfield a little bit. They are both great players with great futures ahead of them.

McILROY: STOKE CAN'T LIVE WITH US

Sammy McIlroy feels Sir Alex will opt for experience when United travel to Stoke on Saturday. The Northern Irishman, who left the Reds to join the Potters in his playing days, is confident the Barclays Premier League leaders will be able to overcome a stiff examination at the Britannia Stadium.

Speaking at the filming of the club's official Greatest Ever XI DVD, McIlroy said: "Stoke have a totally different way of playing. They are a big, physical side and set-pieces are going to play a big part in it.

"It's how we can cope with that but, once we get the ball down, I don't think Stoke are going to be able to live with us, the form we're in at the minute.

"I think it'll be tough but I think United will win. Sir Alex will absolutely put out a side that can stand up to Stoke's physical side, without taking anything away from the type of football we're playing. To cope, I think he'll put some experience in there and Rio Ferdinand knows all about playing there in games like this.

"If Rio's fit and able to go, I think he will play down there as the manager goes for an experienced side."

BOSS: THEY'RE ALL THREATS

Although the home clash with Chelsea on Sunday is a huge game, Sir Alex believes all the top clubs will drop points in difficult away fixtures this term.

Highlighting the progess made by Stoke, who drew with the Blues on the opening weekend, the manager feels it's wrong that all the talk in the media is already about a two-horse race between United and City for the title because difficult challenges are posed every week.

"I think, at the moment, the Manchester teams are enjoying the publicity of the predictions that the two of us will be involved in winning the league," said the boss. "In the background, lurks Chelsea and they don't need the publicity. It's all going to Manchester and they'll be enjoying that at the moment. I don't think you can say Chelsea are the biggest threat. I think they're all threats and hopefully we're a threat to them.

"Games against the big four will always be important. But middle-division teams are taking points off the top teams now. Stoke beat Liverpool and drew with Chelsea. They're making a big impact and now Stoke are playing European football. They travelled to Kiev and got a result, got through their last round very well. There's always room for teams to progress in this league and I see Stoke becoming quite an important side. That's a reminder of how tough it is for all of us - when we go to places like Stoke, Sunderland and Newcastle then we can drop points."

EVANS STRIVES FOR CONSISTENCY

Jonny Evans is enjoying starting regularly for the Reds as he regains the consistency that all top centre-backs require.

The Northern Ireland international has had some battles with Chelsea in the past and has stood up to the physical threat of the likes of Didier Drogba. Clearly, the defender's form going into the match means it's difficult for the manager to leave him out.

"I feel a lot better," stressed Evans to ManUtd.com. "I feel more focused and that's something I need to be all the time, 100 percent focused, to get the best out of me. I think last season it was more just a lack of consistency. At times, I thought I did well and other times I didn't do as well as I'd like. So my consistency is just needed back in my game. It was one of the strongest points I had in the three seasons before. There's things I've worked on and I just wanted to get that back."

The big games are starting to come thick and fast now the international break is over and the centre-back realises Chelsea will be stern opponents on Sunday.

"It's quite crazy that people are writing Chelsea off. Last season, Chelsea were winning 4-0 or 5-0 every game at the start of the season, kind of like we are doing ourselves, but we still went on to win it so we can't discount them at all."

GIGGS: IT'S ABOUT APPETITE

Ryan Giggs has warned the youngsters coming through the ranks at Old Trafford that talent alone is insufficient to make the grade at United.

The veteran midfielder feels a number of the club's teenagers are good enough to pull on the famous red shirt but the important step is to have the fight and determination to succeed at the highest level.

"I'm not going to single any of the youngsters out but there are talents and this is an important part of their career," he told MUTV.

"I look at the likes of the lads who have come through from my age group and, later, John O'Shea and Wes Brown. When they got the chance, they took it. What they've got to do at this age now - 17, 18 and 19 - if they get a chance to train with the first-team, they have got to make an impact. If they come on as a sub, they must make an impact and make the manager not leave you out for the next game.

"It's tough in the first-team as there's a lot of quality but it's even tougher to stay there. The majority coming through have got the quality, it's just have they got that desire and appetite to take it up a step more?"

BOSS MAKES YOUNG REVELATION

Sir Alex has admitted he tried to sign Ashley Young when the winger was still at Watford.

The boss kept tabs on the England international after seeing him join Aston Villa and was able to complete a deal this summer with the wide man only having a year left on his deal in the Midlands. It's the first time the manager has admitted having such a long-standing interest in the player.

"He's done very well," enthused Sir Alex. "With his versatility and his understanding of the game. Obviously we tried to get him a few years ago from Watford but we were just a bit late. But he's matured at Aston Villa, his form last season was fantastic considering they had a difficult season and since he's come to us, he's taken to the challenge really well.

"Some players come to a club like ours and find it difficult to settle in but, in the case of Ashley, he's done very well.

"He's getting support from Patrice Evra down the left side and that kind of experience Evra brings to the team and that side of the pitch is very important to a new player coming to the club."

CLEVERLEY AIMS TO KEEP PLACE

Tom Cleverley has achieved his goal of breaking into the United first team, and his early success has only strengthened his resolve to stay there.

"Personally and on a team scale, things have gone exactly how I hoped," the 22-year-old told us on Friday. "I am in the team and I have got to look to stay there now. That was always my aim. Maybe it has happened a bit quicker than I thought, but to be playing and winning games and to have made the start we have is ideal."

With Sir Alex confirming he won't make many changes to his side for Saturday's short trip to Bolton, Cleverley is set for his fourth straight league start at the Reebok Stadium. Wanderers striker Kevin Davies has revealed his side will provide a combative test, but Cleverley is ready for it.

"Bolton are a more physical side but this is why I went to Wigan last year," he explained. "I played against teams like Bolton and Stoke - some of the more physical sides. It benefitted me massively experience-wise. Playing in the Premier League every week, having the pressure of getting results, even though it was at the different end of the table, helped me when I went into United's team this year.

"Whatever the league has to throw at me, I am ready for. If we play well I am sure we will get a positive result."

IT'S A SQUAD GAME

ManUtd.com's Adam Marshall blogs on the beauty of having quality cover in all areas...

Now the international break is over, the games start coming thick and fast as United have additional Champions League and Carling Cup commitments.

Sir Alex Ferguson knows how best to utilise his squad and will reward those who have patiently watched the Reds rack up three consecutive victories in the Barclays Premier League. A quick glance at the players at the manager's disposal tells you everything you need to know about the champions' remarkable strength in depth.

As the team prepares for the tough trip to Bolton, it's worth pointing out that last season's joint-leading scorer in the Barclays Premier League, Dimitar Berbatov, has had just 25 minutes of league action this term. Fellow striker Michael Owen has not had a sniff yet, mainly due to injury and illness, although he is fit again. And there's also Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf who have had to make do with a Reserves outing against Swansea to stay fresh.

It's not just up front either - Rio Ferdinand has been warned by the boss he may have to wait before making his return and, at the time of writing, experienced players of the calibre of Ryan Giggs, Ji-sung Park, Michael Carrick and Javier Hernandez have still to make their first starts.

The embarrassment of riches at Old Trafford also means there's some exciting youngsters coming through, eagerly awaiting an opportunity in the Carling Cup. It all means the manager can rotate his squad accordingly for the tough programme ahead and everybody is fully aware of the competition for places and the need to always perform at their best.
