CHICHARITO RELISHES CHELSEA TIE

Javier Hernandez hopes being at home in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea will give United a slight advantage.

The Reds will travel to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday 6 April, before the return leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday 12 April. The Mexican is excited about the tie and feeling positive over United's chances of progressing.

"They are two very important games. We play in the same league and it is going to be tough. It always is against Chelsea," he told ManUtd.com.

"It is a little bit of an advantage that we are at home in the second game. We know it won't be easy, but we try to win every game we play at Manchester United and Chelsea are another team that we need to beat."

It was Chicharito's brace against Marseille which sealed United's place in the last eight, taking his tally to three in the competition following his winner in Valencia.

"I am very happy with the way things are going in the Champions League. I want to keep it like that," he added. "I want to maintain my confidence, whether I play for one minute or 90. I always want to be my best. Perhaps the style suits me a little bit but I need to think game by game, not to look too far in the future. I'll just try to do my best."

REDS SEEK HOME WIN HAT-TRICK

The United players are targeting the perfect end to a great eight days when Bolton Wanderers visit Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

After various trials and tribulations when travelling, the Reds have so far taken full advantage of being back on home turf, with last weekend's FA Cup win over Arsenal and Tuesday's Champions League triumph over Marseille. Now the goal is to make further progress on a third front, the Barclays Premier League, by beating Bolton - no easy task,  according to Wes Brown.

"I think Bolton will come and have a go," Wes told ManUtd.com. "They're in the semi-finals of the FA Cup which is a big boost for them and have been doing well in the league. We all know how Bolton play, they're a big powerful team and very dangerous in attack. So it'll be a difficult game."

Brown admitted the Arsenal result, on the back of defeats at Chelsea and Liverpool, had given the Reds a much-needed fillip. "It was a good win for us and I think it gives us an edge now going in the last part of the season. After a disappointing run of results, it settled everyone down."

Wes' team-mate Michael Carrick agreed, telling the website: "It was important to get back to winning ways against Arsenal. And beating one of your main rivals, albeit in a different competition, maybe does give you a boost psychologically. Hopefully our good form will continue against Bolton."

PALLISTER CALLS FOR POSITIVE APPROACH

Ex-Reds centre-back and MUTV pundit Gary Pallister believes attack could be the best form of defence against Bolton...

United have given everyone else hope with the losses against Chelsea and Liverpool. We were very unfortunate not to get something at Stamford Bridge, although we can't have too many complaints about the Liverpool game. It's given Arsenal, City and Chelsea a lifeline. That's why beating Bolton is absolutely vital now.

A few weeks ago Chelsea and City would have thought they didn't have a chance of getting back into the title race. All of sudden, they've been given a bit of a sniff. I guess they'll be looking for a slip-up in a match that United are expected to win. It's a game like Bolton, a team doing well in the league under Owen Coyle and in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, that could be a potential banana skin.

The injuries against Marseille, with John O'Shea and Rafael going off, were a blow as United are already suffering in that department without first-choice pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Calf strains (which both are suffering from) are difficult, you have to be careful with those. Sometimes it's not worth a gamble, and with the international break coming up that's an ideal time for someone like Vidic to get himself right.

Vidic is a real miss because he'd be the one to go up against Kevin Davies, a pivotal figure in Bolton's front line. You need to match muscle with muscle and Vidic certainly does that. In his absence, Chris Smalling and Wes Brown have to be strong.

Attack may be the best form of defence, and the real boost has been Antonio Valencia's return. It's amazing to see the confidence he's had in the last two games considering he has been out since September with a serious injury. He's made a real difference coming off the bench. I expected him to be a bit tentative, but I've not seen any signs of that. His rehabilitation has gone well and mentally he is strong. It's early doors, but the glimpses we've had of him are promising. It's like he's never been away. His pace doesn't seem to have been affected and he played an important role against Arsenal and Marseille.

Having Valencia on one wing and Nani on the other could make a real difference going into the run-in. Nani has had a terrific season. Giggsy has probably played more games on the left wing out of necessity, and the injury to Ji-sung Park has also been a problem. To have more ammunition to provide to the strikers is going to be crucial, especially at home where teams often come to Old Trafford and demand that you break them down. I guess Owen Coyle's side won't do that because they're playing with confidence and freedom. They'll come to Old Trafford and express themselves and try to put United under pressure. It's set up for a good game.

SMALLING SET FOR GUNNERS TIE

Chris Smalling believes hard graft on the training ground could pay dividends for United, as Sir Alex Ferguson's men bid to bounce back from two defeats with victory over Arsenal.

The young defender experienced the toughest period of his Reds career so far when an away loss to Chelsea - in which he was unfortunate to concede the Blues' match-winning penalty - was followed by a disappointing 3-1 reverse at Liverpool. He's now hoping time will be a healer, especially as the time was well spent preparing to face the Gunners who were busy in midweek, also losing, against Barcelona.

"Obviously, everyone was really gutted immediately after the Liverpool game," Smalling told ManUtd.com. "Last week was disappointing but this week we've got back out onto the training pitch and worked hard. It's all about getting refocused and it's good to have another big game around the corner."

As Smalling himself says, "Games don't come much bigger than an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal. The FA Cup is a massive competition and we want to kick on. The manager spoke earlier in the season about the importance of it, especially as it's been a while (seven years) since the club last won the Cup.

"The manager really wants us to go out there and perform. Hopefully we can get the result we want on Saturday."

BLOG: CUP-TIE TONIC UP FOR GRABS

David Stowell wonders which side will benefit from an FA Cup pick-me-up...

United and Arsenal are both wounded animals right now. In the last week or so, Sir Alex's men have found Stamford Bridge and Anfield to be unhappy hunting grounds, while Arsene Wenger's boys were gunned down in the Nou Camp. Now one of them will have their FA Cup run ended by a major rival.

With the title race on a knife-edge, Saturday's quarter-final could lead to a lot more than cup progress. The two managers have fought as many psychological battles as football matches down the years and their ever-thirsty quest for trophies will take another twist this weekend. United versus Arsenal always means a lot. Whatever the competition, whatever the venue and whatever the form book says.

The Reds' away form has been infamously fragile - three defeats in the last four league fixtures on the road have given Arsene Wenger a glimmer of hope of landing his first title for seven years. But OT has been a cliched fortress - Sir Alex's men have been imperious on home turf, dropping just two of 39 home league points.

So how Arsenal will approach Saturday? How will they respond to defeats at the hands of Brum and Barca? The Wengerboys' much-maligned soft centre has reared its head a few times and the Gunners fans I've spoken to still fear a goal drought and the odd Carling Cup finalesque defensive mix-up could cost them more trophies...

Red View: Berbatov interview, Legend on Liverpool, United heroes video + more

Friday, March 4, 2011

BERBATOV: CONFIDENCE IS THE KEY

Dimitar Berbatov bagged a hat-trick when United last met Liverpool in the league, and is now the top flight's leading scorer. No wonder he was buzzing when he spoke to FourFourTwo magazine, who kindly share his quotes here...

How confident are you at the moment when you step onto the pitch?
I'm pretty confident right now, for sure. I'm a striker and if I'm scoring a lot of goals then my confidence is high, but the important thing is how you react when you're not scoring goals. In those times it's essential you remain confident. Every player goes through bad times - the truly top players distinguish themselves then by not losing confidence.

Where do you keep the match balls after scoring your hat-tricks?
I keep them at home, after getting them signed by my team-mates. They're very precious to me - they remind me that with hard work and belief you can do a lot of good things.

Why have United looked like a different team away from home this season?
It's hard to say why, but our opponents lift their game when we play at their ground. We're the biggest club, so that's only natural. It makes our job harder, but that's not an excuse: we need to be better away. At home, we're doing really well, entertaining the fans, scoring a lot of goals. The aim is to bring that to our away performances.

You won the league with United in 2008/09. How does the current side compare?
It's not too different. Yes, we sold one or two people but the core of the side has remained the same and that gives us an advantage. We're like one big family - everybody supports each other, not only on the pitch but off it, too. We're all great friends.

MACARI: TOUGH TIMES CALL FOR COOL HEADS

United legend and MUTV pundit Lou Macari hopes his old club will be focused and fortunate at Anfield...

I've always thought teams need a bit of luck in order to win the league and I'm even more convinced after events at Stamford Bridge this week. If decisions go against you it makes your job so much harder.

What's important, though, is that Sir Alex's men don't make life even more difficult for themselves. From now until the end of the season, concentration and discipline will be key. As soon as you switch off or step out of line you concede silly goals or end up getting players sent off. And once you start doing that you can more or less forget about winning all your games.

If we want to win the league, the players' priority has to be to stay clear of injury and to not get caught up in any incidents that can lead to red cards. Discipline, character and commitment are paramount. Cast your mind back to the Champions League tie against Bayern Munich last season and you'll recall how a little lapse in concentration had a huge effect. United were brilliant in the first half at Old Trafford - the best I'd seen us play all season - but then young Rafael got lured into trouble and the referee, harshly or not, showed him a red card. We ended up losing and going out of the competition.

Moments like that can change games. They can even have a massive bearing on your whole season. The players will be disappointed by what happened at Chelsea, but at Anfield on Sunday there can't be any retaliation or arguing with the referee. It has to be total concentration for 90 minutes. That's how we'll ensure we get the right result.

FANS' DEFENCES FOR ANFIELD

With Nemanja Vidic suspended and Rio Ferdinand doubtful for Sunday's trip to Liverpool, we sought the views of United fans on who should start in their place. Here's a sample of posts from our message board... why not post your opinion?

TheGorgeousOne
"This may sound silly but I would play Carrick at centre back. He likes to play just in front of the back four so he could easily fill in. He's fit, strong and can read the game well which is exactly what you need at the back."

Kevie-SA
"I would definitely play Wes Brown at centre-half. I think Smalling can match Carroll for physicality and along with Brown's experience and his reading of the game, a very effective partnership could be formed."

Smithers 99
"I don't know what is wrong with playing John O'Shea alongside Chris Smalling. I thought they both played well against Chelsea and deserve to keep their places. My back four for the Liverpool match would be Rafael, O'Shea, Smalling and Evra."

Sir Kones
"People don't give Wes Brown enough credit and forget he played in nearly every match of 2007/08 when we won the league and Champions League. He should start on Sunday."
