ANTONIO'S BIGGEST TEST

Antonio Valencia admits the forthcoming Champions League games against Milan will be a milestone in his club career.

The Ecuadorian winger has made five European appearances for the Reds so far, scoring in two (CSKA Moscow home and away), but he recognises that the February 16 and March 10 clashes with the Italian giants represent a step up.

"They will be the biggest games I've played in club football," says Valencia.

"Milan are one of the biggest clubs around. They've won so much in their history, including the Champions League, and it will be a big test for us. Every game is important, but we're definitely looking forward to both matches against Milan."

The last 16 tie against the Rossoneri falls in a busy month for the Reds with vital league clashes and a Carling Cup final also on the agenda. Valencia insists:

"We've got some really big games coming up, but these are the matches you want to be playing in. We're ready and focused for a long run of big games with high stakes."

YOUR TACTICS FOR TUESDAY NIGHT

Sir Alex Ferguson has plenty to ponder for the first leg in Milan. What would you do if you were in his shoes? These Talking Reds users have some ideas...

UTD FAN – AG
I watched Milan recently and they have a lack of pace all over the pitch. By playing Ando and Fletch we can get amongst key men like Pirlo and Gattuso and build attacks from there. The full backs also seem suspect so Valencia and Nani should be able to support Wazza well if we get the ball to them.

JIMMY H
I think we should keep it tight to start with and frustrate their crowd. As time goes on Milan will need to play more expansively and that's when we can raid down the flanks with Park and Valencia.

NATHAN SCHOLES
The 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 formation has worked wonders for us over the past few matches; it put Arsenal and City to the sword in clinical fashion and would have done the same to Villa had it not been for the sending off. I’d have Nani's flair on the right and Park's industry on the left, with Valencia on the bench to save him for the coming weeks. But whoever plays, I'm sure the guile and quality in the squad will pull us through!

REDS vs ROSSONERI - THE STORY SO FAR

United 2-1 Milan, 08.05.58, European Cup semi-final 1st leg
A patched-up XI - including four survivors of February’s Munich air crash - gave a spirited display, winning with goals from Dennis Viollet and Ernie Taylor (pen).

Milan 4-0 United, 14.05.58, European Cup semi-final 2nd leg
An arduous trek – the Reds arrived just 25 minutes before kick-off – and a hostile reception teed up a torrid test. Harry Gregg admitted, “Milan were a class above us.”

Milan 2-0 United, 23.04.69, European Cup semi-final 1st leg
The Reds’ cause was hit by Nobby Stiles limping off and John Fitzpatrick’s sending off. “Some of the decisions were absolutely disgraceful,” complained Paddy Crerand.

United 1-0 Milan, 15.05.69, European Cup semi-final 2nd leg
Bobby Charlton broke through in the 70th minute but despite besieging the Milan goal, the Reds couldn’t equalise on aggregate - although a clear Denis Law goal was disallowed.

United 0-1 Milan, 23.02.05, Champions League 2nd round 1st leg
The Italians gained their first win on English soil when Hernan Crespo punished an error by Reds keeper Roy Carroll in the 78th minute. Sir Alex said: “The opportunities we had in the first half were rushed.”

Milan 1-0 United, 08.03.05, Champions League 2nd round 2nd leg
The Rossoneri gave the perfect lesson in how to defend a slender advantage. Crespo scored the only goal again, cleverly looping a header over Tim Howard to seal the tie and book a final place opposite Liverpool.

United 3-2 Milan, 24.04.07, Champions League semi-final 1st leg
Ronaldo drew first blood, only for Kaka to strike twice. Rooney converted a sumptuous Paul Scholes pass to equalise on the hour – and then lashed his second goal past Dida to win the home leg in injury time.

Milan 3-0 United, 02.05.07, Champions League semi-final 2nd leg
Carlo Ancelotti’s side proved too strong as Kaka, Clarence Seedorf and Pippo Inzaghi completed a comprehensive win. Milan went on to be worthy champions of Europe, beating Liverpool in the final.
