SMALLING STANDS BY FOR SIX-POINTER

Chris Smalling is ready, willing and able to face Arsenal on Monday night, although he accepts he may not be required when the clash kicks off.

“Rio [Ferdinand] and Vida [Nemanja Vidic] are first choice, but I have to be ready if called upon. “I’ve been watching from the sidelines and learning from them in training,” said Smalling, a substitute for Rio during Tuesday's draw with Valencia.

The 21 year-old defender has also been swotting up on the opposition, watching the Gunners' emergence from credible title contenders to the current leaders of the Barclays Premier League pack. The former Fulham man admits to being a fan of Arsenal's top scorer.

“Samir Nasri has definitely shown that [he’s one of the best players in the league]," assessed Smalling. "He’s a key player we will have to watch out for. He is so comfortable on the ball. I admire him greatly but you cannot just single one player out when you’re talking about Arsenal.

“We don't have any need to fear them, though. We’ll have more than 70,000 fans cheering us on. They should be intimidated more than we are. Monday is a massive game and we want to send out a statement. Now it’s time for us to kick on.”

Match Pack - Arsenal

GUEST BLOG: BRYAN ROBSON

The United legend feels the Reds are in great shape for a pivotal period...

Monday's match against Arsenal is another big one for us.

I’ve consistently made the point that results against your immediate rivals could make the difference in the title race this season, and that's especially true as we jostle for pole position going into the New Year. When you consider that top spot in the league has rotated between ourselves, Arsenal and Chelsea in the last couple of weeks, it adds even more spice to the game.

We’ve been on a great run recently, while results elsewhere have gone in our favour. We went top after beating Blackburn - it was just disappointing we couldn’t retain it when our game against Blackpool was called off last weekend.

The great thing for the manager heading into this crucial period is that he’s got his best players coming back to form and fitness. Wayne Rooney looked devastatingly good against Blackburn, his sharpness will be a major plus for us.

Judging by the team’s performance in the Blackburn game, we’re starting to show some of our best form. We’re setting ourselves up for a strong Christmas and New Year, the time when we expect to click into gear.
