BOSS WELCOMES BAYERN TIE

Sir Alex Ferguson feels United have a "good chance" of progressing in the Champions League after drawing Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. But the boss knows from experience that the German side cannot be underestimated.

Bayern were the opponents for Sir Alex's finest hour as manager, of course, when the Reds won the 1999 final in dramatic fashion at the Nou Camp to cap an extraordinary Treble triumph.

But in seven meetings with the Germans, that remains United's only victory. Four matches have ended in draws, while the Reds have lost twice - home and away at the quarter-final stage in 2001 when Bayern gained revenge of sorts by knocking Sir Alex's men out of Europe.

"The history of playing Bayern in past European ties tells you it’s going to be a very difficult tie for us," Sir Alex told MUTV.

"It’ll be a fantastic atmosphere in both games. They have a great stadium and a good pitch and we’re up against a good, experienced team.

"Hopefully we’ll have all the players we need for the game and if we do then we have got a good chance."

RIO EYES END TO LIVERPOOL RUN

Rio Ferdinand can think of nothing worse than making it four in a row this season.

But don’t worry, he’s not talking about the league title – the desire to lift that trophy again still burns strong.

“We’ve lost the last three games we’ve played against Liverpool,” the Reds defender explains. “Those games haven’t gone to plan but there’s always room for improvement and now is the time for us to beat them.

“Liverpool are one of our biggest rivals and we never like losing to them. I’m confident we can get three points on Sunday and end this streak they have over us.”

Liverpool’s form has been decidedly patchy this season (Rafa Benitez’s men haven’t strung together three consecutive wins since September), but Ferdinand maintains that will count for little when they visit Old Trafford.

“It’s all about who produces the goods on the day in these games,” he says. “We’ll need to be at our best because, on their day, Liverpool can be a top team."

RED RIVALS RECALL THE GLORY DAYS

Mickey Thomas (United 1978-81) and Alan Kennedy (Liverpool 1978-85) recall some classic clashes from their playing careers...

What's your favourite memory of playing against Liverpool at OT, Mickey?
MT: When I scored the equaliser in our 2-1 victory in April 1980. I think Alan got injured in the build-up – thanks for your help, Alan! Liverpool were the best team around and we had to show them respect, but we had the Indian sign over them.

What was it like coming to Old Trafford as a Liverpool player, Alan?
AK: United away was always a difficult game for us. Bryan Robson was probably as good as any midfield player in world football at the time and up front there were players like Mark Hughes, Norman Whiteside and Frank Stapleton. They had quality throughout the team and the crowd was on our back, wanting us to go back down the East Lancs Road with absolutely nothing. Sometimes that’s what we got.

Did Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson and Phil Thompson - all top-notch central defenders - dislike or even fear playing against Hughes and Whiteside?
AK: They hated it. Hughes and co were not only good players, they were also physical. Thompson could read the game well but he wasn’t built like a classic centre-back, and he didn’t like the shoving and pushing that used to go on then. United also had some tough guys in midfield like Remi Moses. But we had ours too, like Jimmy Case and Graeme Souness, so we could give it as well as take it!
