BOSS WARY OF BATTLING WOLVES

Sir Alex Ferguson expects a tough game on Saturday evening when United visit Wolves in the Barclays Premier League.

Mick McCarthy's men currently lie sixteenth in the table just a point above the drop zone having won just one of their last nine league games. And with their top-flight status very much at stake, the United boss is anticipating a tricky test at Molineux.

Speaking at Friday’s press conference, Sir Alex said: “It’s a real dog fight down there. Wolves are fighting for their lives so we expect a difficult match. It’s not going to be easy, but we’re in a situation now where we need to win all of our games."

With Chelsea in FA Cup action against Stoke City this weekend, the Reds can reclaim top spot with a draw or a win. With just ten games remaining in the title race, Sir Alex is desperate for his side to gain an advantage on Saturday.

"Going top is certainly an incentive for us and it knocks an away game off the list - we'll have just four aways after that. Winning at Wolves is a big issue for us but our form's good so hopefully we can get the points we need."

BACK TO OT: THE TREBLE WINNERS' STORY

If he plays for Milan on Wednesday, David Beckham will be the seventh member of United's 1999 Champions League final line-up to return to Old Trafford in opposition colours. Results for the previous six - no wins, two draws and 16 defeats between them - will not fill him with confidence...

Peter Schmeichel
The Great Dane kept out the Reds for 50 minutes when he returned with Aston Villa in February 2002, before conceding the only goal of the game to Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Denis Irwin
The Irishman was on the receiving end with Wolves when his countryman John O’Shea scored his first goal for United in August 2003. The champions won 1-0.

Nicky Butt
Nicky was a Newcastle player when he played at OT in October 2006. By the time he came off in the 62nd minute, Ole Solskjaer had scored both goals in United’s 2-0 win. On his next visit, he endured the entire 90 minutes as the Magpies were murdered 6-0 in January 2008 – notable for Cristiano Ronaldo’s first Reds hat-trick. Carlos Tevez (2) and Rio Ferdinand were also on target. It was third time lucky for Nicky on the opening day of the 2008/09 season – Newcastle actually scored, through Obafemi Martins, and gained a point when United failed to add to Darren Fletcher’s equaliser.

Andy Cole
Little more than a month separated Andy’s last OT appearance for United, and his first visit with Blackburn Rovers in January 2002 when the Reds won 2-1. In 2002/03, Cole came back twice with the Lancashire club: drawing 1-1 in the League Cup semi-final, first leg in January but losing 3-1 in the league in April, when three ex-Reds were in the Rovers side - Cole, Dwight Yorke and goal scorer Henning Berg. Cole led the line for Fulham in March 2005 and was again on the losing side, 1-0. His one season with Portsmouth in 2006/07 brought him to OT for two defeats, 3-0 in the league and 2-1 in the FA Cup.

Dwight Yorke
As well as the 2002/03 visits with Cole, Yorke came one more time with Blackburn in November 2003, when the Reds won 2-1. In September 2007, he visited with Roy Keane’s Sunderland team, losing 1-0. In December 2008, he achieved the same result, again with the Black Cats, when Nemanja Vidic scored at the death.

Teddy Sheringham
Teddy’s first trip back with Tottenham was a painful one in March 2002, as United won 4-0 with two goals apiece from Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy. In September that year, the margin was more kind - only 1-0 to the Reds on that occasion. Teddy's next team Portsmouth lost 3-0 in November 2003 when Ronaldo scored his first goal for United. In March 2006, he came on as an 80th-minute sub in West Ham's 1-0 defeat.

Good excuse to watch the '99 Champions League final again? It's always on MUTV Online.

MY OLD TRAFFORD: EUROPEAN NIGHTS

Clashes with foreign clubs figure quite frequently in My Old Trafford, a collection of memories on ManUtd.com. Will Milan's visit be another unforgettable evening?

David Gill, chief executive
I really enjoy Champions League nights here. I think what sets the atmosphere apart is people coming here to Old Trafford after a day at work, perhaps after a visit to the pub. It’s also great to play against teams and players who you don’t regularly see in the Premier League.

Sir Alex Ferguson, manager
Old Trafford is a special place on European nights, when the stadium’s full, the floodlights are on and the fans are up for it. It’s an enormous lift to the players when the fans are behind them – the Barcelona semi-final in 2008 is a great example. Our supporters were unbelievable. They took us over the line.

Michael Carrick, player
The 7-1 win over Roma was great, especially from a personal point of view as I scored twice, but beating Barcelona in 2008 meant we got through to the final. I can't think of any match at Old Trafford to top that. That was as special as it gets.

Keith Singleton, supporter
I'll never forget the Milan semi in 1969 when United fought like lions to hold on to the European Cup. We won 1-0 and although we went out, it was still a fantastic night. The noise was above and beyond anything I've heard since at OT (or anywhere).
