EVANS: ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

Jonny Evans insists the United players must forget the two points dropped at Fulham last weekend, and instead focus on taking all three from West Ham.

The Reds defender told United Review : "We should have killed the game off early on but we took our foot off the pedal and let Fulham back into the game.

"But it’s always about your next game in football; you can’t dwell on the past."

Despite making an improvement on last season's opening two games and on the last two visits at Craven Cottage, the Reds already trail the league leaders by two points. But Evans says there's no need to worry about anything other than beating the Hammers on Saturday.

"Last season you’ll remember we lost at Burnley in our second game, and we still ran Chelsea very close for the league.

"Obviously we want to win every game but it’s when you get late in the season that the games become really important. It’s still early days."

SIR ALEX RELISHES RANGERS TIES

Sir Alex Ferguson is counting United's blessings and air miles following a favourable group-stage draw in the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds will travel overseas to Spain and Turkey, but stay in Britain for a clash with Scottish champions Rangers, managed by his former assistant, Walter Smith.

The United boss told ManUtd.com: "You can't complain about that, it's a good draw for us. You always look at the travelling side of it and the only one that's of any great distance is the trip to Turkey. Walter Smith's already been on the phone, talking about tickets for the Rangers game at Old Trafford! Like me, he's really looking forward to our games against each other."

Smith was Sir Alex's right-hand man when the Reds won the FA Cup in 2004 but the connections between the United manager and Rangers don't end there, of course. The boss supported the Ibrox club as a boy and later played for them as a striker.

WEBCHAT: MICKEY THOMAS

Ex-United midfielder Mickey Thomas answered fans' questions in a live webchat on ManUtd.com this week. Here's an extract...

Who were the best players you played with? - Mark Whetton, Kettering

At United, I enjoyed playing with Sammy McIlroy. He was a great player, very talented and very skilful. He was the last of the Busby Babes and a true legend. For Wales, it would be Mark Hughes. He was a great player, a real powerhouse.

Which Reds team would you love to have played in? - Jamie Preston, Wirral

We've had some great teams down the years but I have to go for the 1999 side because it's impossible to eclipse winning the Treble. Where would I have fitted in? In the crowd! To play in that side would have been a pleasure. And if I kicked someone, and they had a problem with it, I'd tell them it was Roy Keane's idea!

How do you think United will fare against West Ham? - Umair Khan, UK

West Ham are leaking goals at the moment and we have a very good record against them at Old Trafford. If we've got any ambitions of winning the league, we've got to beat teams like West Ham and we will do. It'll be tough... 4-0!
