BOSS: WE'LL BIDE OUR TIME WITH BEBE

Sir Alex Ferguson says new signing Bebe will compete for a berth on United's wings, but insists there is no rush to throw the 20 year-old into action.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, the boss declared his first aim is to assimilate the attacking midfielder from Portugal into everyday life at Carrington.

"He doesn’t speak any English. That’s got to be addressed obviously, and we'll provide a language teacher for him. It's important to get him integrated into the club and get him to understand what the club’s about," said Sir Alex.

"Once he's allowed to settle in, then we'll see how he does. He’s two-footed, he’s very quick, and he's raw material, but I'm sure we can work with that. He’s young and we’re good at (developing) young players.

"There's no need to rush him as we have good options anyway in the wide positions, in Nani and Valencia in particular. They are starting to show maturity. We’ve also got Ryan Giggs of course, Gabriel Obertan, Tom Cleverley, so we’re okay there."

Bebe was almost unheard of prior to the Reds' surprise midweek swoop. Sir Alex admits it was an impulsive move, triggered by a trusted scout.

"When we identify someone with potential, we would normally assess over a longer period. But we have a good scout in Portugal and he’s very bright. He’s got a tremendous instinct about the boy and we’ve worked on that impulse."

Match Pack: United v Newcastle

BERBA BRACED FOR BIG KICK-OFF

Dimitar Berbatov says United must follow up last Sunday’s impressive victory in the Community Shield by beating Newcastle in the Barclays Premier League.

The Bulgarian striker scored a sublime third goal against Chelsea at Wembley but says beating the reigning champions will "count for nothing if we don’t start with a win against Newcastle on Monday.

"Even though a few of the players were away last week with their national teams, we have prepared well and we’ve been training hard every day to make sure we start the season with three points.”

Newcastle may be among the top flight’s newcomers this season, but United found out last term how dangerous the promoted teams can be at the start of a campaign. Defeat to Burnley in the second game of 2009/10 was an early body blow to the Reds’ title hopes; Berbatov and co can expect a similar test, but hopefully achieve a different result, against the Magpies.

“We know it’s going to be a difficult game, they're a strong side,” says Berba, in an exclusive interview for United Review, the official matchday programme.

“I worked with their manager Chris Hughton at Tottenham, and he’s a great guy and a great coach. I wish him good luck for the season - just not on Monday!”
