ANDERS STAKES HIS CLAIM

Anders Lindegaard is in line to make his first Old Trafford appearance against Crawley Town on Saturday, and the Dane insists United are not contemplating the ramifications of an FA Cup upset.

The competition's romantic tendencies have thrown together the Barclays Premier League leaders and the Blue Square Premier League promotion chasers in the last-16 tie. A Crawley win would almost certainly represent the biggest giant killing in the competition's history, but Lindegaard says such a shock is not on the table, as far as United are concerned.

"It's not an option we think about," Anders told United Review. "Before playing a match you don't wonder what will happen if you lose. You just think positively and it's the same on Saturday. Defeat is not an option."

Lindegaard made his Reds debut in the fourth round victory at Southampton, and Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he expects to hand the Dane his first taste of Old Trafford action on Saturday. With Edwin van der Sar's retirement looming, Lindegaard is focused on taking every chance he gets to shine, while ignoring plentiful media rumours linking United with a string of potential new stoppers.

"It's the best and biggest job for a goalkeeper in the world. It's the job everybody wants: being number one for Manchester United. Small kids want it, the biggest goalkeepers in the world want it. And I want it."

I'M UP FOR THE CUPS

MUTV's David Stowell professes his passion for the senior and junior FA Cups...

I adore cup games. They're a totally different animal to league fixtures.

It's the all-or-nothing, do-or-die, living-on-the-edge feeling that keeps you hooked right until the end, especially when United are involved. On Wednesday night it was the FA Youth Cup that was in the spotlight as the Reds' youngsters beat Newcastle to set up a quarter-final tie with Liverpool, impressing my co-commentator Gary Neville in the process.

Perhaps a few members of the Under-18s side will get a chance in the senior competition this weekend, when non-league Crawley Town come to town. Their players will be looking to write their names into the history books by causing one of the biggest FA Cup shocks in history. It's a dream tie for Crawley, although many expect a landslide victory for our lads. Then again, I still remember when non-league Exeter City came to the Theatre of Dreams six years ago and managed to hold on for a draw. The money from that game essentially saved the debt-ridden club and the Grecians players did their fans proud, forcing Sir Alex's men back down south for a replay.

Some of the appeal of these matches comes down to the fact that the fixture looks so unusual - even ridiculous - on paper. Nine times out of 10, you'd expect United to beat Crawley. Maybe even 99 times out of 100. But the visitors and their swarm of travelling fans will arrive at Old Trafford hoping Saturday's game will be that one occasion where everything clicks. And let's face it, if football always went as expected, we wouldn't love it as much as we do. Still, enough of that sort of talk: let's hope Goliath squashes David on Saturday, eh?
