'CHICHARITO' DELIGHTED BY UNITED MOVE

United agreed a deal to sign 21-year-old Mexican striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez on Thursday, and MUTV got the first exclusive interview…

How does it feel to have signed for United?
It’s a dream and I feel so happy. I’ve really enjoyed my week in Manchester – the stadium, the atmosphere at the club and the history are incredible and I want to do great things here.

You were at the game against Bayern – what did you make of the experience?
I felt a lot of things and, as I said, I’m living a dream. The atmosphere was incredible with all the fans singing. It was fantastic to see.

You’ve met Sir Alex – what are your impressions of the manager?
He is a great person and probably the best coach of all time. All my impressions of the team, the club and the city are incredible.

Your family must be very excited at the prospect of you playing for the Reds…
Yes, they are. My family are my biggest supporters and have been there with me through the good and the bad times, so they’re very pleased.

United are playing in Mexico this summer – what reception can the team expect?
The best. In our country Manchester United are the top team and the reception they will get will be fabulous.

BLOG: FIGHT TO THE FINISH

Nick Coppack writes... Less than an hour after the Reds’ exit from the European stage on Wednesday night, Darron Gibson faced the MUTV cameras and spoke passionately of the task now facing United.

“We either lie down and let the whole season go,” he said, “or we stand back up and fight for the championship.

“We’ve got the experience in the dressing room to do it – a lot of the players have been in this position before. We've got to pick ourselves up because we're still in the race for the title.”

They’re the sort of rousing words you’d expect from a footballer following defeat. In fact, you could argue Gibson’s rallying cry was as predictable as the cries of “shoot” that emanate from the stands these days whenever the Irishman gets on the ball.

And yet his words, delivered with steely determination, were far from hollow: he truly believed in what he was saying. And why shouldn’t the United players be confident? Okay, they’ve lost to Chelsea in the league and been dumped out of Europe in the space of a week, but now it’s down to a sprint finish. Only five games remain and, for the Reds at least, no other distractions.

Of course, if United win all five it will count for nothing if Chelsea do the same: the Blues have the upper hand and boast a two-point lead and superior goal difference. But when has this season ever been predictable?

There’s no point drawing up a list of each team’s remaining fixtures and examining where points may or may not be dropped. No amount of logic can legislate for results like United losing at Burnley or Chelsea getting hammered by Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. This season, more than any other in recent memory, has thrown up shock defeats, late drama and rotten luck. Don’t discount it happening again.

Nobody’s trying to pretend Wednesday’s Champions League exit wasn’t heart-wrenching, but players and fans can’t afford to dwell on the disappointment. Analyse what went wrong and learn from the mistakes? Absolutely. But then put that to one side and focus on what lies ahead.

Winning the league won’t be easy, but this wouldn’t be the first time United have triumphed in adversity.

YORKE RELISHING OLD TRAFFORD RETURN

Eight years after last pulling on the Reds shirt, Dwight Yorke can't wait to run out at OT again on 1 May for United Relief Live, a celebrity-filled fundraising spectacular...

How much are you looking forward to taking to the famous old pitch again?
I don’t think playing at Old Trafford will ever lose its excitement for me. I played lots of games there and it never lost its thrill. You still get an incredible buzz when you walk out on that pitch. It’s a fantastic place to play, a unique atmosphere and it’s all for a great cause too, so that will be brilliant. It didn’t take me long to agree to take part. I still live in the area and being part of Manchester United is more than just football, it’s about getting involved in charity work too.

What will it be like resuming your legendary strike partnership with Andy Cole?
I’m really looking forward to it. I’m still pretty fit, I keep myself in good nick – I only retired six months ago. I play better when I’m relaxed and I think I’ll be very relaxed on the night. Andy’s also still very fit, so I don’t see why we shouldn’t be a pretty good strike force again.

When you're playing charity matches involving non-footballing celebrities, it must be tempting to embarrass them?
We probably will! But you want to entertain people. The fans are paying money to a very good cause so I’m sure there will be some good skills on display. You want to entertain, win, but also play the game in the right manner.
