DEFENSIVE PAIR BACK FOR TOTTENHAM TEST

United have "one or two doubts" ahead of Saturday's lunch-time clash with Tottenham Hotspur, but have been bolstered by Wes Brown and Rio Ferdinand's return to training and their availability for selection.

Sir Alex Ferguson had hoped to also include Owen Hargreaves in his matchday squad to face Spurs, but the midfielder has missed the last two days' training with a calf injury.

The United boss says his men are ready for the challenge of the season's climax after last weekend's late derby win at Eastlands hauled the Reds back into the title hunt.

"There's been a lift around the club this week, no doubt," he told reporters on Friday. "There's always been a sense of atmosphere around the place, but in training this week it's been noticeable, the lift. Training has been very competitive.

"We just need to do our job and let Chelsea deal with their situation. We know we have to win, that's the important thing."

Winning won't be easy, however. Spurs did United a huge favour by defeating Arsenal and Chelsea in the space of four great days, but in their chase for a Champions League place, they now represent a major threat to the Reds' title hopes. "This is the best Tottenham side of my time here," Sir Alex warns.

CRERAND: COURAGE IS KEY

Reds legend Pat Crerand knows what it takes to win the league...

There are several attributes that you need at this stage of the title race - attributes that United have in abundance.

Courage
is very important. It’s easy to be worried about what might go wrong or to play too cautiously. You have to have the courage to believe you can win the league.

Temperament is also vital, because the players can’t afford to lose their heads. And I’m not just talking in terms of discipline. You saw against Manchester City how United kept playing a passing game right until the end – the players didn’t panic and start lumping the ball long like so many other teams would have done. That’s the sign of a truly great team, of players who have confidence in their ability on the ball.

Experience is key, too. There were oohs and aahs in the press room at Eastlands when the journalists saw the manager had picked Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville. Some people were wondering if the older players were up to it. But it was a masterstroke from Sir Alex: these players have played in crucial games on so many occasions and were able to draw on that experience. But really, everybody at United knows what’s required now.

Adrenaline can also be helpful. You can survive on it at this stage, especially after winning a game like we did against City. When you can see the finish line, everybody wants to play in every match.

CHARITY MATCH EXCITES SIR ALEX

The boss previews the return of some Treble heroes to Old Trafford...

United Relief Live next Saturday, 1 May, promises to be a great day out. Are you looking forward to it?
Yes, I am, because many of the players from our 1999 team are going to be there. I think it will be a very special occasion. I’m hoping for a good attendance. We’ve got a great fan base, and the fact we’re not playing until the next day, at Sunderland, may help. We’re staging this charity game for all the right reasons and I’m sure the fans will want to come and remember the great times we had with players like Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen.

It'll be great to see Cole and Yorke at OT again. How good were they in 1999?
They were fantastic, especially that season when they scored 52 goals between them. I think they were the best in Europe at the time, they were unbelievable. It was a partnership that just took off, immediately. I don’t know why, the chemistry or something just clicked between the two of them but it developed into an unbelievable partnership. They were so effective I found difficulty, great difficulty, in keeping Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer happy. I was really fortunate to have four great strikers, even it created headaches for me at times!

Are you hoping the event will raise lots of money for charity?
That's the main object. The club does fantastic work through the Foundation and our link-up with UNICEF. I think the event will bring in a lot of money for a good cause.
