BOSS READY FOR PHILLY TEST

Sir Alex Ferguson has watched with interest the rise of Major League Soccer – and now the United boss is predicting a golden era for football across the pond.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday night's friendly against Philadelphia Union, Sir Alex said: "The MLS has improved a lot over the last few years. Fans here are more knowledgeable about soccer now and the MLS is very competitive.

"The form of the national team has helped and there are so many kids playing soccer in America. What we’re seeing is just the start: in 10 years I think soccer will be huge."

The Reds kicked off the 2010 tour with a 3-1 win over Celtic in Toronto last weekend, and Ferguson is expecting another decent workout against Philadelphia.

"We watched their last two games against Toronto (2-1 win) and Celtic (1-0 win) – they look a very competent team with lots of energy in midfield," Sir Alex added. "We’ll do our homework as best we can, but our main concern is the players’ fitness and tempo."

Reds defender Wes Brown, who played the second half against Celtic, said: "Philadephia is a great city with great training facilities – some of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s hot but it feels good and we are working hard."

Philadelphia Union v United, 21 July, kick-off 19:30 local time (00:30 UK).

SHEASY ANSWERS FANS' QUESTIONS

John O'Shea took part in a live webchat from the team hotel in Philadelphia on Monday. Here's a selection of questions put to him by fans from around the world...

How have you been filling your spare time on the US tour? - Jamie Turner
Sleeping! Training is very intense out here so we're all really tired in the evenings. I've been watching a bit of ESPN and Two And A Half Men, which I downloaded from iTunes.

Is pre-season training as hard as everyone makes out? - James Cuthbert
It is hard, it really is. Not as hard as it was in years gone by, mind you. It's more personalised now, which is down to the sports science staff. A good pre-season is so important as it gives you a base for the season ahead.

Apart from OT, which is your favourite ground to play at, and why? - John O'Brien
I'd have to say White Hart Lane and Goodison Park. They're both old-fashioned stadiums where you have the fans right on top of you. You get great atmospheres there.

Who was your childhood football hero and why? - Hamza Jehangir
Paul McGrath because of how he played for Ireland. Also, Germany's Matthias Sammer. He used to come out of the defence into midfield with the ball and that was inspiring.

Who is the joker in the dressing room? - Abdullah Bhaiyat
Anderson and Nani are always there or thereabouts. Sometimes Wayne and Fletch, too, because they sit next to each other. Those four are the main ones.
